Abstract: Firms are often reluctant to share data because of mistrust, concerns over control, and other risks. Multi-party computation (MPC) is a new technique to compute meaningful insights without having to transfer data. This paper investigates if MPC affects known antecedents for data sharing decisions: control, trust, and risks. Through 23 qualitative interviews in the automotive industry, we find that MPC (1) enables new ways of technology-based control, (2) reduces the need for inter-organizational trust, and (3) prevents losing competitive advantage due to data leakage. However, MPC also creates the need to trust technology and introduces new risks of data misuse. These impacts arise if firms perceive benefits from sharing data, have high organizational readiness, and perceive data as non-sensitive. Our findings show that known antecedents of data sharing should be specified differently with MPC in place. Furthermore, we suggest reframing MPC as a data collaboration technology beyond enhancing privacy. Collapse

Abstract: This paper proposes an algorithmic solution to Group Key Management (GKM) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), which could address a single point of failure in cybersecurity. The paper moves away from the traditional (de)centralized and distributed solution in GKM and focuses on GKM decision making based on a) the context in which WSN and their nodes communicate, and b) the semantic which describes the environment where WSN and their nodes reside. The proposed algorithm defines which node, within the WSN, could start a re-keying process by generating a group key, and why/how this decision on the re-keying has been made. The algorithm is computable and thus it would be feasible to implement it in software applications built upon a set of WSN nodes in constantly changeable and dynamic mobile computing environments. Abstract: Smart Tourism is a contemporary trend in tourism and Ambient Intelligence is a multi-disciplinary paradigm in which a combo of themes makes the environment around people intelligent. This technology arbitrated intelligent environment make people experiences and the endowments therein smarter. Although this paradigm has been maturing for over two decades, yet the application of Ambient Intelligent in this domain is a relatively new concept and the schematics of Ambient Intelligent Tourism are unclear. With the use of the Jazz metaphor, this paper helps in synthesizing the comprehension of the paradigm, presents its schematics, and proposes a Jazz design for Ambient Intelligence Systems. Abstract: Retail commerce is influenced by digital technologies at large scale. After electronic commerce and its evolution into mobile commerce, we now see that the Internet of Things (IoT), one of the most disruptive developments in recent times, is about to radically transform retail commerce from need recognition to post-purchase engagement and service. Extant literature mainly investigates technical features of IoT, missing out on a customer-centric perspective. Theoretically founded in Activity and Affordance Theories, this paper conceptualizes IoT-commerce, identifies opportunities for customers, and links them to the customer buying process. Based on an extensive literature review, twelve affordances are derived and evaluated with a sample of real-world IoT devices. All affordances offered by electronic and mobile commerce are still valid for IoT-commerce but extended by three affordances unique to IoT-commerce: context-aware services, natural interactions, and automated customer processes. Affecting all steps of the customer buying process, IoT-commerce is worth to be understood by researchers, customers, and companies. Collapse

Abstract: Activity Recognition Systems - ARS are proposed to improve the quality of human life. An ARS uses predictive models to identify the activities that individuals are performing in different environments. Under data-driven approaches, these models are trained and tested in experimental environments from datasets that contain data collected from heterogeneous information sources. When several people interact (multi-occupation) in the environment from which data are collected, identifying the activities performed by each individual in a time window is not a trivial task. In addition, there is a lack of datasets generated from different data sources, which allow systems to be evaluated both from an individual and collective perspective. This paper presents the SaMO – UJA dataset, which contains Single and Multi-Occupancy activities collected in the UJAmI (University of Jaén Ambient Intelligence, Spain) Smart Lab. The main contribution of this work is the presentation of a dataset that includes a new generation of sensors as a source of information (acceleration of the inhabitant, intelligent floor for location, proximity and binary-sensors) to provide an excellent tool for addressing multioccupancy in smart environments. Abstract: In this commentary, we consider the ambivalent role of ubiquitous computing during the COVID pandemic and we point to the risk that some negative, IT-related practices associated with the pandemic will endure after it. We call these lasting effects the digital scars of COVID-19. The same IT that has positive impacts for some people might have negative impacts for others – often vulnerable populations, minorities and socio-economically disadvantaged groups. Some issues stem from the longstanding digital divide that characterises modern societies. Yet, the pandemic is exacerbating these inequalities. We are worried that some debatable uses of technology will persist after the pandemic is over. We therefore point to the prominent role of the IS community in enabling positive aspects of IT use during and after the pandemic, while mitigating negative aspects, especially in the long run. Our sociotechnical background enables us to see these dynamics in a processual and holistic way. To shed light on these issues, we analyse three key technologies widely used to deal with COVID (social software, AI/ML and robotics) and identify critical topics and associated research questions where IS scholarship should focus its attention to generate novel theorising and impactful practical insights. Abstract: This opinion paper addresses and contributes to the discourse on whether there is a central artifact that captures the essence of the information systems (IS) discipline. It argues that the IS discipline can, and should be, faithfully captured by an IS artifact. We offer a theoretical conception of the IS artifact by drawing upon General Systems Theory (GST). Key concepts of GST are distilled as meta-principles which inform our formulation of the IS artifact. We use the meta-principles of the IS artifact to develop salient assertions that theorize what an ‘IS’ is. To demonstrate the appropriateness of our conception, we illustrate how the assertions we developed are consistent with patterns related to emerging topics in IS research, notably, healthcare and IT, and Fintech. We formulate a research agenda on these emerging topics—based upon the conceptions developed in the paper—to guide future research. We conclude with the contributions and implications of our study, including the relevance for IT-enabled work in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. Collapse

Abstract: Publicly accessible social media data is frequently used for scientific research. However, numerous questions remain regarding what ethical obligations researchers have in regard to using such content. We report on researchers’ own views and practices regarding informing, getting consent from, and sharing research outputs with users when using publicly accessible social media data. Findings reveal both diverging current practices and views on what researchers ought to do in the future. Some researchers view the ethics of public data use as merely requiring compliance with the requirements of their ethics board, while others’ ethical practices go beyond what is minimally required. Some researchers worry about the effects of contacting users to inform, seek consent, or share outputs with users. Yet others note that they want to build bridges with online communities through these mechanisms, but struggle with a lack of precedent and tools to do so at scale. Collapse

Abstract: The study of sociomateriality in Information Systems (IS) research has been increasing its impact and interest. Primarily focusing on how the material and the social are intertwined and its implication for organizations, IS research on sociomateriality doe s not account for role of the individual and the "self". Enactive approaches to cognition are also concerned with sociomateriality focusing on how the selfindividual-engages with an intertwined sociomaterial environment. To contribute to bridging this g ap, we leverage from developments in the cognitive sciences and philosophy of mind to propose an enactiveecological approach to sociomateriality. In this paper, we bridge the phenomenological concept of solicitations and the affective-self approach to previous research on sociomateriality and affordances in the IS community. IS researchers and practitioners will benefit from a strong and robust theoretical foundation with a richer account of the individual engagement in sociomaterial studies as well as new research possibilities. Abstract: Based on mobile computing technologies, ubiquitous systems enable people to access information anywhere and anytime. In addition to the capability of interactivity concerning inquiry processing based on user input through interfaces, ubiquitous systems may offer contextualization and personalization dealing with information filtering based on task contexts and user preferences, which help relieve user effort on the move. This study investigates how different combinations of these major ubiquitous computing capabilities affect user behavior. Using the unifying framework of Activity Theory, it conceptualizes user-system interaction as a tool-mediated activity, the different aspects of which are facilitated by interactivity, contextualization, and personalization. It is hypothesized that such capabilities shape user experiences including sense of control, motive fulfillment, and perceived understanding, which lead to how ready people are to interact with ubiquitous systems. The results from an experiment support the hypothesized relationships, and suggest that different capabilities are interdependent in their effects. The findings yield insights on how to take a systematic and balanced approach of ubiquitous system design to enhance user experiences. Collapse
