Abstract: A well-known approach to managing and controlling workflows in organizations is the workflow management system (WFMS). Recently, approaches utilizing augmented reality headsets as WFMS front ends have been discussed, enabling higher efficiency, effectiveness, and usability for certain application scenarios. However, existing design-oriented approaches lack tangible guidance for implementation. A well-known approach to address such knowledge gaps is a reference architecture, which inter alia reduces development times and risks and facilitates collaboration between developers. Based on an existing tentative design theory for an augmented reality-based WFMS front end, we contribute a reference architecture containing an extended design theory, user interface design, and UML models for use cases, components, classes, and sequence flows. The reference architecture was successfully operationalized in a prototype and positively evaluated via a survey of respective users. Collapse

Abstract: Since the European information economy faces insufficient access to and joint utilization of data, data ecosystems increasingly emerge as economical solutions in B2B environments. Contrarily, in B2C ambits, concepts for sharing and monetizing personal data have not yet prevailed, impeding growth and innovation. Their major pitfall is European data protection law that merely ascribes human data subjects a need for data privacy while widely neglecting their economic participatory claims to data. The study reports on a design science research (DSR) approach addressing this gap and proposes an abstract reference system architecture for an ecosystem centered on humans with personal data. In this DSR approach, multiple methods are embedded to iteratively build and evaluate the artifact, i.e., structured literature reviews, design recovery, prototyping, and expert interviews. Managerial contributions embody novel design knowledge about the conceptual development of human-centric B2C data ecosystems, considering their legal, ethical, economic, and technical constraints. Abstract: Design science as a research paradigm is gaining popularity in the information systems (IS) discipline. E-gov­ ernment research explores IS artifacts designed to improve the quality and efficiency of public administration and service. This paper utilizes the E-government Design Research Model (EgovDR Model) to review e-gov­ ernment designs. Through a comprehensive literature review, this paper identifies prototypical e-government tasks for design science implementation and the corresponding solutions. We demonstrate whether and how the development and evolution of e-government designs continue to gain relevance in design science research. Additionally, this paper identifies and analyzes the theories employed in the literature to illustrate how the EgovDR Model has facilitated e-government designs in increasing rigor over time. Abstract: Nowadays, the Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile devices are ubiquitous. Both, the IoT and mobile devices contain sensors and thus can provide data about the device’s environment. The sensor data can be used to infer the current context. However, for this purpose, the sensor data have to be aggregated. In this aggregation process, several different sensors and data provided by other sources, such as databases, can be used. In order to facilitate this, the paper presents a modeling language for context modeling based on sensors. Moreover, a detailed usability evaluation of the presented context modeling language is shown. This evaluation is based on three hypotheses regarding learnability, time expenditure and effectiveness. An experiment involving an experimental group and a control group was conducted to test these three hypotheses, and the results were interpreted. Collapse

Abstract: IS professionals often use multiple conceptual modeling scripts to develop an understanding of a domain. However, using multiple scripts introduces potential inconsistencies between scrips which can reduce script readers' cognitive ability to develop an understanding. While there are computational methods to avoid or detect inconsistencies, there is a lack of studies on how individuals deal with inconsistencies when they are performing different tasks. We developed a 2x2 between-subject experimental design to investigate the effects of syntactic vs semantic inconsistency on two different systems analysis and design tasks. We expect to contribute to conceptual modeling research, by investigating the effect of inconsistencies, comparing the effects of two tasks, and by elaborating the on role of a pragmatic factor, domain familiarity. Abstract: Forensic analysis of failed software projects can aid in managerial understanding of the issues and challenges of delivering a successful project. The factors and their interrelationships causing software project failure are not well understood or researched with a strong forensicanalytic approach. Previous papers have not adequately explored how dynamic interaction of multiple factors can lead to critical events that ultimately portend eventual failure. This paper proposes the development of a System Dynamics (SD) model that will represent the key factors, their dynamic interactions, and the influence of exogenous events in causing software project failure. Forensic data will be used as inputs to the SD model to assist managers in understanding the factor interactions, the importance of individual factor metrics, as well as the sequence of interactions in causing possible software project failure. Outcomes from the model will include a likelihood of software project failure, possible factor sequences leading to failure, and suggestions of remediation activities that might mitigate eventual failure. Abstract: Because most real-world domains intended to be supported by an information system are complex, practitioners often use multiple different types of conceptual modeling scripts to understand them. We performed two experiments to examine how two theoretical factors of multiple scriptscombined ontological completeness and ontological overlap-influence how users develop an understanding of a real-world domain from multiple scripts. Results of the first experiment show that to some degree, ontological overlap improves participants' understanding of a domain, more so than combined ontological completeness. In the second experiment, we tracked the eye movement data of participants to understand how ontological overlap between scripts impacts users' information search and cognitive integration processes. We found that some occurrence of semantically similar constructs between scripts helps individuals to identify and relate constructs presented in different scripts. Users, therefore, can identify and focus on script areas that are relevant to their problem tasks. However, a high level of ontological overlap decreases the attention paid by participants to relevant task-specific areas because they spend more time searching for relevant information. Together, our findings both refine and extend existing conceptual modeling theory. We clarify the dialectics between the full and parsimonious real-world representations offered through multiple scripts and the individual's understanding of the domain that is represented by those scripts. Abstract: Nowadays, organizations use agile software development to remain competitive in their frequently changing business environment. Inspired by the success of agile methods on a small scale, organizations have started to apply them in larger contexts. However, the limited scalability of agile methods is a problem. Metrics can be a success factor for achieving agility at scale, thus adopting them is promising. Most scaling agile frameworks provide few recommendations regarding metrics. Likewise, research on metrics in largescale agile development lacks concrete guidance for metrics or their organization-specific adoption. To fill this gap, we propose two artifacts. We present the design of a minimalistic metric management fact sheet (MMFS) for large-scale agile development to support practitioners in using metrics in their organizationspecific development environment. Furthermore, the MMFS is the basis for our metric catalog documenting 196 metrics identified in an expert study to provide a comprehensive metric set for scaling agile environments. Abstract: Know your customer (KYC) processes place a great burden on banks, because they are costly, inefficient, and inconvenient for customers. While blockchain technology is often mentioned as a potential solution, it is not clear how to use the technology’s advantages without violating data protection regulations and customer privacy. We demonstrate how blockchain-based self-sovereign identity (SSI) can solve the challenges of KYC. We follow a rigorous design science research approach to create a framework that utilizes SSI in the KYC process, deriving nascent design principles that theorize on blockchain’s role for SSI. Abstract: The resource-efficient development of technical devices is one of the most important non-functional requirements regarding global warming. This applies especially to the growing field of the (Industrial) Internet of Things. The energy consumption of such systems must be minimized to ensure a long operational lifetime. The realization requires exploiting the possibilities of the complete system (microcontroller and external peripherals) by the software application. However, software engineers are often unaware of the energy-saving properties of the hardware platform. This paper introduces a novel software framework that aims to bridge the gap between the hardware level and the application level. It enables vertical control, i.e., consistent access across multiple software architectural layers. This paper describes the framework in terms of design patterns, shows an implementation based on the C++20 standard, and concludes with an evaluation using a popular hardware platform. Collapse
