Abstract: Despite the growing relevance of artificial intelligence (AI) for businesses, there is a lack of research on how top-level executives must be skilled in AI. Drawing on upper echelons theory, this paper explores executive AI literacy, defined as the combined AI skills of top-level executives, and its relevance for different executive roles. We conducted a text-mining analysis of 1,625 executives' online profiles and 1,033 executive job postings from unicorn firms retrieved via web-scraping from an online professional social network. We find that AI skills are mostly required in product-related executive roles (vs. administrative roles). Thus, we provide an AI-specific perspective complementing prior information systems research on executives, which asserts that (non-AI) IT is driven by administrative executive roles. Our paper contributes to AI literacy literature by shedding light on the substance of executive AI literacy within firms. Lastly, we provide implications for AI-related information systems strategy. Abstract: While the literature suggests that CEOs' emotions can affect organizational decisionmaking, leadership, and employee engagement, we know little about how they influence firms' culture and outcomes of innovation. Acknowledging that innovation is a critical element for long-term success, we investigate the relationship between CEO emotions and firm innovation. The results of our analysis of 1,903 firm-year observations supports our theorizing of an inverted U-shaped relationship between CEO emotions and innovation outcomes. The findings show that moderate levels of emotions lead to the highest innovation outcomes, while extremely high or low levels decrease innovation. This study contributes to the literature by applying the Yerkes-Dodson law within upper echelon theory, demonstrating a non-linear relationship between CEO emotions and innovation, and utilizing a novel algorithm to measure CEO emotions more objectively. Abstract: The swift advancement of digital technologies demands CEOs to prioritize digital innovation strategies to stay competitive. However, an overemphasis on digitality, neglecting aspects like customer focus, operations, and collaboration, can hinder innovation. Using a neural network, we evaluated CEOs' digital strategies by training on 1,000 company pitches and applying this to S&P 500 CEOs ' Shareholder Letters (2001-2018. We discovered an inverted U relationship between digital strategy intensity and innovation performance. This stresses the need for a balanced strategy with the right digital focus. Our research illuminates top executives' digital mindset in driving innovation, emphasizing the potential pitfalls of a purely digital approach. Furthermore, our machine-learning method offers a novel, scalable way to quantify digital strategy, paving the way for subsequent research. Collapse

Abstract: This paper studies the impact of a chief digital officer (CDO) on corporate environmental performance. Drawing on the upper echelons theory and the attention-based view, we examine whether and under what environmental contingencies the presence of a CDO affects a firm's environmental performance.To test our theory, we use a dataset of 514 publicly-traded U.S. firms and analyze their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 2005 to 2021. Our results show that the presence of a CDO is negatively associated with GHG emissions and that environmental complexity moderates this relationship. Thereby, we extend the understanding of the outcomes of new functional top management team members and contribute by bringing the industry environmental level into the analysis. In addition, the results encourage managers to consider corporate environmental performance outcomes and environmental contingencies when deciding whether to implement a CDO role. Collapse

While IT investments have consistently been a priority, it is widely accepted as a given, resulting in research primarily examining IT investment outcomes. Recent studies highlight tensions between the role of CIOs and governing boards in determining IT resource allocations. Recognizing this, the current study investigates the dynamics between healthcare CIO presence and the board in driving targeted HIT investments. Abstract: In this paper, we propose that contextual "language style matching" between CEO and CIO -a form of similarity in verbal style based on the unconscious use of function words -can provide insight into the quality of collaboration between CEO and CIO. Following upper echelon and managerial cognition research, we argue that high levels of language style matching between the CEO and CIO when discussing the role of technology for the business reflects a shared understanding of the role of technology. As CEO-CIO shared understanding aligns technology innovation with overall business strategy, the economic value of the firm's technological innovations increases. Counterintuitively, we expect the relationship to weaken when CEOs are overly optimistic, as CEOs are less likely to question technological innovation from a business standpoint. Thus, the shared understanding of the CEO and CIO is misguided. Using panel data, we find empirical support for these predictions. Collapse

Abstract: The extant research has often examined the work-related experiences of corporate executives, but their off-the-job activities could be just as insightful. This study employs a novel proxy for the risky hobbies of chief executive officers (CEOs)—CEOs’ hobby of piloting a private aircraft—and investigates its effect on credit stakeholders’ evaluation of the firms led by the CEOs as reflected in bank loan contracting. Using a longitudinal data set on CEOs of large United States-listed firms across multiple industries between 1993 and 2010, we obtain strong evidence that bank loans to firms steered by CEOs who fly private jets as a hobby tend to incur a higher cost of debt, to be secured, to have more covenants, and to be syndicated. These effects are mainly driven by banks, which perceive such firms as having a higher default risk. These relationships become stronger when the CEO is more important to the firm and/or can exercise stronger control over decision making. Supplemented by field interviews, our results are also robust to various endogeneity checks using different experimental designs, the Heckman two-stage model, a propensity score-matching approach, a difference-in-differences test, and the impact threshold of confounding variables. Abstract: To drive digital transformation, firms are increasingly adding IT-experienced executives to their top management team (TMT). Yet, whether IT-experienced executives can aid firms to achieve digital transformation remains unresolved theoretically and empirically. Drawing on human capital and group literature, we propose that there are limits to the benefits received from adding IT-experienced executives to a TMT, resulting in a curvilinear relationship between the share of IT-experienced executives in the TMT and a firm's digital orientation. We also propose that this relationship is moderated by CEO entrepreneurial orientation and power concentration in the TMT. We test and find support for most of our hypotheses using a secondary panel data set comprising 1,855 firm-year observations from 256 firms listed in the S&P 500 between 2005 and 2017. Collapse

Abstract: Although prior studies examine how the characteristics of CEOs influence IT-related business initiatives, we have a limited understanding of how CEOs' political ideology is associated with the strategic decisions in the IS setting. This study conceptualizes CEO political ideology (liberal vs. conservative) by drawing upon upper echelons theory. Then, we define and measure IT resource disparity to capture how unevenly CEOs allocate their IT resource across business units. Empirically, we find that liberal CEOs are more likely to allocate IT resources evenly (i.e., low IT resource disparity), whereas conservative CEOs prefer to allocate IT resources unevenly (i.e., high IT resource disparity). In addition, we find that CEO political ideology has a significant moderating role in the relationship between IT resource disparity and firm performance. Abstract: This paper applies upper echelons theory to investigate whether chief information officers (CIOs) and boards of directors affect the development of AI orientation, which represents firms' overall strategic direction and goals regarding the introduction and application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. We tested our model using a dataset drawn from 1,454 publicly listed firms in China. Our findings show that the presence of a CIO positively influences AI orientation and that board educational diversity, R&D experience, and AI experience positively moderate the CIO's effect on AI orientation. Our post hoc analysis further demonstrates that these board characteristics represent contingencies that impact AI orientation but not conventional IT orientation. This paper contributes to the upper echelons literature and IT management research by offering contextualized arguments that explain new business and IT strategies such as AI orientation. Further, our findings suggest important implications about how to build top management teams and boards capable of effectively developing AI orientations. Collapse
