Abstract: Digital twins have been used in manufacturing to describe, predict, and prescribe responses to complex problems. The digital twin is a constellation of technologies that mirror physical objects in the virtual world, including what has happened, is happening and could or should happen in the future for the mirrored object. What is common in previous conceptualizations of digital twins is that there is a physical boundary to the extent that digital twins can mirror real objects (sometimes including the objects’ environments). We propose a blended approach, using McKinsey’s straw man and Parmar et al.’s. (2020) framework, to offer a more rigorously structured process for arriving at a refined conceptualization of digital twins in the educational service environment. Collapse

Abstract: Since the manufacturing industry is facing increasingly advancing digitalization, digital twins (DT) have become a popular means for integrating various actors' value creation using a smart product. DTs are information systems that connect the physical and virtual worlds. The design of DTs is time-consuming, expensive, and lacks appropriate prescriptive design knowledge for its development. Design principles (DP) represent a mechanism to codify design knowledge into prescriptive knowledge. However, the mostly abstract DPs are often difficult for practitioners to operationalize during software development projects, rendering the design knowledge difficult to access. The paper at hand addresses these issues by providing a reference model for DT development as a semi-abstract artifact. The model has been constructed by drawing on a literature review and empirical cases in the manufacturing industry. The reference model includes multiple adaptation mechanisms to ensure a flexible development of company-specific DTs. Collapse

Abstract: Because most information systems in real-world domains are complex, practitioners often use different types of conceptual modeling scripts to understand them. Modeling methods such as UML, for example, provide more than a dozen scripts for practitioners to use. We study how script readers decide which of several different scripts to use during systems analysis and design tasks. We carried out a free-simulation experiment to test how users select scripts based on two factors: combined ontological completeness and ontological overlap. We find that participants indeed decided to select more than one script to achieve a more complete domain representation. But, when they selected more than three scripts, they decided to remove scripts and reduce combined completeness to increase the clarity of the combined representation. Our results indicate that script readers prefer relatively less complete scripts with high levels of clarity over more complete, but more overlapping, script combinations. We detail the implications these findings have for the theory and the practice of conceptual modeling. Collapse

Abstract: Over the last years, the nature of service has changed owing to conceptual advances and developments in information technology. These developments have given rise to novel types of service and smart service systems (SSS), ie, resource configurations capable of learning, dynamic adaptation, and decision making. Currently, the internet of things (IoT) is turning physical objects into active smart things, bridging the gap between the physical and the digital world. Smart things advance SSS as they observe the physical environment, access local data, immerse into individuals' everyday lives and organizational routines. In line with the emergent nature of both phenomena, the impact of the IoT on SSS yet needs to be explored. Building the basis for explanatory and design-led research and for the analysis and design of SSS, a means for the conceptual modelling of SSS that accounts for novel IoT-enabled concepts is in high need. Hence, we designed, demonstrated, and evaluated a domain-specific modelling language (DSML) for SSS. We evaluated the DSML by using it in the modelling of real-world scenarios from all functional IoT domains, by submitting it to the scrutiny of industry experts, by discussing it against generic DSML requirements, and by analysing to what extent it meets domain-specific design objectives compared with competing artefacts. Abstract: Information technology has recently seen a huge progress in innovative healthcare technologies that rendered healthcare data bigger. Connectivity on 7/24 basis between human to device and device to device have a crucial role in individuals’ lives. Therefore, Mobile Cloud System (MCC) has become an indispensable tool. Parallel with the rapid developments in the Internet of Things, convergence has become an important issue. Our proposed method, accordingly, can be converged with mobile-cloud environments with cloud computing in handling healthcare information. This study uses Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) as 4 VCPU and 8 GB RAM and proposes a model based on the Android based mobile phones for stroke patients with cardioembolic (689) and cryptogenic (528) subtypes. The system set up through this study has two basic application elements which are mobile application and server application. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) module is beneficial for classifying the two stroke subtypes while server application is used for saving the data from the patients. Accordingly, our model guarantees availability, security, and scalability as a system for stroke patients applying Stroke dataset for ANN algorithm, Multilayer Perceptron Algorithm (MLP), which has been done for the first time in literature with big data in this scope. The main contributions are: (1) The outcomes will display an individual unique social insurance framework. (2) The outcomes will be utilized for the distinguishing proof of stroke-related data to be gathered by cell phones that are Android based. (3) Stroke patients will find out about their condition of wellbeing through an ANN application programming interface, which will provide a sort of organization for the patients. Overall, an efficient and user-friendly stroke determination human services framework has been presented through this Healthcare System for patients. Collapse

Abstract: When analyzing or designing information systems, users often work with multiple conceptual models because each model articulates a different, partial aspect of a real-world domain. However, the available research in this area has largely studied the use of single modeling artifacts only. We develop a new theory about interpreting multiple conceptual models that details propositions for evaluating how individuals select, understand, and perceive the usefulness of multiple conceptual models. We detail implications of our theory development for empirical research on conceptual modeling. We also outline practical contributions for the design of conceptual models and for choosing models for systems analysis and design tasks. Finally, to stimulate research that builds on our theory, we illustrate procedures for enacting our theory and discuss a range of empirically relevant boundary conditions. Jan Recker is an AIS fellow, Alexander-von-Humboldt fellow, chaired professor of information systems and systems development at the University of Cologne, and adjunct professor at Queensland University of Technology. He is presently editor in chief of the Communications of the Association for Information Systems. Abstract: The risks associated with the adoption of cloud computing solutions are dependent on a multitude of factors and vary considerably depending on the selected cloud service and deployment models. In addition, regulatory amendments regarding IT security and privacy trigger the need for flexible risk management solutions for cloud environments in order to adequately identify and manage the associated risks. Thus, the aim of this study is to design and implement a risk management tool for cloud services. By designing a modular and extensible tool, the individual risk profiles of the diverse cloud deployments can be addressed. The tool was developed and evaluated iteratively and by applying multiple methods, including a systematic literature analysis, expert interviews as well as surveys for evaluation. The developed risk management tool is useful for science and practice alike as it enables to effectively address risks resulting from cloud deployments and to adequately incorporate regulatory requirements. In line with the efforts to go beyond the functionbased design and towards more relational design perspective, this study proposes to create use case models at the level of affordances rather than functions, so use cases focus on user interactivity of the system rather than its functions. Useful for redesigning and enhancing legacy systems, this study suggests a technique to mine the wealth of user log data to create use cases based on the sequence of affordance actualizations. It illustrates affordance-based use case mining by analyzing use cases of a real-world legacy system. The study contributes to the design research and practice by incorporating an affordance perspective into the popular use case modeling technique, and by proposing and demonstrating a technique to mine affordance-based use cases. Abstract: Use Case modeling is a popular technique for documenting functional requirements of software systems. Refactoring is the process of enhancing the structure of a software artifact without changing its intended behavior. Refactoring, which was first introduced for source code, has been extended for use case models. Antipatterns are low quality solutions to commonly occurring design problems. The presence of antipatterns in a use case model is likely to propagate defects to other software artifacts. Therefore, detection and refactoring of antipatterns in use case models is crucial for ensuring the overall quality of a software system. Model transformation can greatly ease several software development activities including model refactoring. In this paper, a model transformation approach is proposed for improving the quality of use case models. Model transformations which can detect antipattern instances in a given use case model, and refactor them appropriately are defined and implemented. The practicability of the approach is demonstrated by applying it on a case study that pertains to biodiversity database system. The results show that model transformations can efficiently improve quality of use case models by saving time and effort. Collapse

Abstract: Conceptual models are used to graphically capture the requirements of an information system. Research on conceptual modeling has focused on improving the modeling process. The vast majority of studies has focused on evaluations of single grammars or models. However, practitioners typically use multiple, and different types of models in system analysis and design tasks. Recker (2014) proposed a theory of combined ontological coverage to predict and explain the faithful use of multiple models in combination, but this theory has not been tested yet. The aim of this research in progress paper is to describe how experiments can be designed to examine the propositions of Recker’s theory of combined ontological coverage. The findings of our experiments, once executed, will provide a grounding that will justify further research on conceptual modeling use as well as provide deep insights and foundations to understand how conceptual models are used in today’s system analysis and development process.
