Abstract: This study identifies the different individual defensive responses that are triggered by ad personalization. We investigate how these responses impact user engagement behavior on social media. The study also examines the role of transparency in advertising and the perceived benefits of personalization on user engagement in Europe. To conduct our study, we are theoretically grounded in the defensive response model. A multi-step quantitative approach constituting two experiments and a survey is used. With 154 and 199 participants each, the experiments allowed us to define the theoretical model. The experiment identified paradoxical findings. We indent surveying online ads-users to examine the impact of personalization on individual defensive responses and the role transparency plays in predicting user engagement. Our research contributes to the theory by identifying defensive responses that explain the engagement behavior, and the impact of transparency on personalized advertising. Collapse

Abstract: Following the rampant increase in Bitcoin prices, there has been a proliferation of cryptocurrencies, which have become a major way of doing business across national boundaries. This paper investigates the link between cryptocurrency markets and drug trafficking activities. More specifically, we explore the impact of the announcement of 24 major drug busts on the systematic risk and return of the world cryptocurrency market. We deploy an event study methodology to estimate the abnormal returns associated with drug trafficking activities in the cryptocurrency market. We find that the relationship between the two is quite strong in the case of some cryptocurrencies, albeit weaker in others. However, we show that drug bust news tends to create uncertainty, and accordingly impart risk into cryptocurrency markets. This study confirms the predictions of convenience theories of crime as to the relative attractiveness of cryptocurrencies to criminals, and the extent to which not only general, but also their own future interests, sacrificed readily on the altar of accessibility. We highlight how when social and regulatory foundations are weak, criminal behaviour may overwhelm virtual spaces, margin­ alizing more orthodox businesses, no matter how altruistic the intentions of their founders. Abstract: Along with rapid advancements in digital, and physical technologies, shared autonomous electric vehicles are forecasted to gradually complement and replace traditional human-based mobility systems. Information systems play a key role in such a deep socio-technical system to pave the path toward a more sustainable future. This study investigates a hybrid ride-hailing platform of automated and human-driven vehicles. Our focus lies on the demand side where we evaluate the influence of user behaviors on economic and environmental system performance. For this, we employ a data-driven agent-based simulation modeling heterogeneous vehicle and user agents calibrated by rental data of a leading vehicle-sharing company. Our findings declare that diverse customer responses to the introduction of shared autonomous electric vehicles yield significantly differing fleet performance and ecological costs. We also observe that the status quo customer communication design of ride-hailing platforms needs adjustments to maximize the potentials of future hybrid shared mobility systems. Collapse

Abstract: Today’s companies rely heavily on in-company information technology standards (ICITS) to reduce costs, ensure flexibility, and facilitate the planning, implementation, and operation of IT systems. Steering and managing ICITS has proven to be challenging, revealing the need for efficient governance mechanisms. But even though prior research demonstrates the challenges of ICITS, viable advice on how to implement ICITS is scarce. In this paper, we develop an organizational design theory for the management of ICITS based on the framework of organizational control theory. We conducted a critical case study to identify basic goals, constitutive elements, and fundamental mechanisms of a working ICITS management. The resulting design goals and principles were then evaluated and further refined in the light of additional expert interviews. With our work, we wish to extend the body of theoretical knowledge on the management of ICITS and help practitioners master the various challenges occurring in this domain. Collapse

Abstract: We investigate how two digitally delivered nudges, namely light social support (nonverbal cues such as kudos or likes) and motivational messaging, affect employees' self-reported physical activity in an online, corporate wellness program. Within this unique field setting, using data from several years, we found evidence that both types of nudges provide benefits beyond the effect of cash incentives. However, the effects vary by individual, depending on whether the employee is actively engaging in physical activity, and by time, depending on how long the employee has been in the wellness program. We found light social support to be less effective over time, while motivational messages were found to be more effective with the duration in the program and generally more effective for physically inactive users. Our findings have implications for the design of wellness systems, suggesting different approaches depending on an employee's current activity level and tenure in the program.De Liu is a Xian Dong Eric Jing Professor of Information and Decision Sciences at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. Abstract: Introduction to the special issueInformation Communication Technology (ICT): People, Culture, and Globalization The broad objective of this Special Issue (SI) was to deliver new insights into the management of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the view of ICT users', consumers', or managers' cultural diversity, in order to enhance our understanding of how ICT connects people across countries or cultures and affects their behavior. Understanding how ICT and culture affect human decisions is timely and of crucial importance because ICT is a driving force behind almost any form of business internationalization or globalization. Although the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's war in Ukraine currently lead to a slowdown in business globalization, it is clear that many firms continue to operate in, or expand into foreign countries, as well as deal with people from different cultures within a country. Almost all firms and organizations today use ICT to connect with people and must therefore address questions of how culture affects ICT usage and user behavior, and what the consequences are for the organization.We therefore aimed to bring together a group of international researchers in marketing and related disciplines broadly concerned with business globalization and ICT management. The SI was initially planned as part of the Royal Bank International Research Seminar (RBIRS), which has since 2001 been very successfully held bi-annually in Montreal, Canada. RBIRC, the international conference version, was also very successfully held in 2010 in Tokyo, Japan, in 2012 in Shanghai, China, and in 2016 in Wuxi, China. RBRIS has since many years brought together likeminded researchers from across the globe, who share research interest frequently in fields related to the role of culture in consumer behavior, how consumers interact with technology, as well as links between the two. We thus planned to organize the 2020 edition of RBIRC at Kedge Business School in Marseille, France and link this SI to it as an opportunity for researchers to publish innovative and relevant work. Unfortunately, the emergence of COVID-19 as a global pandemic has scuttled our ambitious plans, and we were ultimately forced to cancel RBIRC 2020 for the well-known restrictions that prevented us making the conference meeting happen in Marseille. We regret these circumstances very much and hope that future issues of RBIRS can happen in-person again.Given that a number of authors had prepared targeted manuscripts before we cancelled the conference, we decided to maintain the SI, with the kind approval of the Editor-in-Chief, Yogesh Dwivedi, to whom we are most grateful. Despite the difficult circumstances, we received 11 manuscripts that underwent careful peer reviews, and we have finally accepted three of them for inclusion into the SI. The three papers cover three different forms of modern ICT, namely social media, human-like service robots, and P2P accommodation-sharing platforms. The authors of these papers use various types of methods and data to tackle different phenomena that enhance our understanding of how culture affects ICT usage and behavior.The first paper by Takhar, Bebek, & Jamal (2021) offers insights into the role of social media's liminal characteristics (anonymity and freedom) for ethnic minority consumers' social-cultural identity construction. Given their multicultural social environments, ethnic consumers in particular experience cultural tensions in their daily lives related to potentially conflicting online-and offline cultural-social identities. Focusing on Instagram and third-generation British Sikhs, and using a multi-method qualitative research design (observations, nethnography, and semi-structured interviews), the authors demonstrate how liminality enables imagined or idealized social-cultural identities with important implications for social media marketing, such as virtual brand communities. Marketers should consider liminality as a factor that empowers consumers' identity construction, which can help them develop stronger and more sustainable customer relationships.The second paper in this SI, written by Pitardi, Bartikowski, Osburg, Collapse

Abstract: In order to ensure energy affordability, we propose a design-oriented behavioral research study with the aim of helping low-income tenants to develop an efficient energy behavior by increasing their energy self-efficacy. We propose to compare different digital interventions in field tests to understand, in an unfiltered way, what helps low-income tenants to be able to reduce their energy costs. We thereby contribute towards understanding how the vulnerable group of low-income tenants with their limitations and needs regarding their energy consumption behavior can be effectively supported digitally. Abstract: The quest to open black box artificial intelligence (AI) systems evolved into an emerging phenomenon of global interest for academia, business, and society and brought about the rise of the research field of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). With its pluralistic view, information systems (IS) research is predestined to contribute to this emerging field; thus, it is not surprising that the number of publications on XAI has been rising significantly in IS research. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of XAI research in IS in general and electronic markets in particular using a structured literature review. Based on a literature search resulting in 180 research papers, this work provides an overview of the most receptive outlets, the development of the academic discussion, and the most relevant underlying concepts and methodologies. Furthermore, eight research areas with varying maturity in electronic markets are carved out. Finally, directions for a research agenda of XAI in IS are presented. Collapse

Abstract: Conversational Agents (CAs) are becoming part of our everyday lives. About 10 percent of users display aggressive behavior toward CAs, such as swearing at them when they produce errors. We conducted two online experiments to understand user aggression toward CAs better. In the first experiment, 175 participants used either a humanlike CA or a non-humanlike CA. Both CAs worked without errors, and we observed no increased frustration or user aggression. The second experiment (with 201 participants) was the focus of this study; in it, both CAs produce a series of errors. The results show that frustration with errors drives aggression, and users with higher impulsivity are more likely to become aggressive when frustrated. The results also suggest that there are three pathways by which perceived humanness influences users' aggression to CAs. First, perceived humanness directly increases the frustration with the CA when it produces errors. Second, perceived humanness increases service satisfaction which in turn reduces frustration. Third, perceived humanness influences the nature of aggression when users become frustrated (i.e., users are less likely to use highly offensive words with a more humanlike CA). Our research contributes to our theoretical understanding of the role of anthropomorphism in the interaction with machines, showing that designing a CA to be more humanlike is a double-edged sword—both increasing and decreasing the frustration that leads to aggression—and also a means to reduce the most severe aggression.
