Abstract: Digital device recycling platforms (DDRP), popularized by the resale commerce (reCommerce) movement, allows users to sell, trade-in, and recycle used digital devices online. Although DDRPs offer new opportunities for commerce and sustainability, challenges exist to usher in their wide adoption. This study aims to develop a deeper understanding of the reasons underlying seller resistance to the DDRP that is grounded in the innovation resistance theory (IRT). Abstract: ☆ This editorial opinion paper provides a subjective viewpoint on the potential impact of generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT in the domains of education, business, and society. Its objective is to offer initial guidance on the opportunities, challenges, and implications associated with these technologies. It is worth noting that, given its nature as an editorial opinion piece, this submission has not undergone a formal double-blind review process but has been reviewed informally by appropriate experts.Transformative artificially intelligent tools, such as ChatGPT, designed to generate sophisticated text indistinguishable from that produced by a human, are applicable across a wide range of contexts. The technology presents opportunities as well as, often ethical and legal, challenges, and has the potential for both positive and negative impacts for organisations, society, and individuals. Offering multi-disciplinary insight into some of these, this article brings together 43 contributions from experts in fields such as computer science, marketing, information systems, education, policy, hospitality and tourism, management, publishing, and nursing. The contributors acknowledge ChatGPT's capabilities to enhance productivity and suggest that it is likely to offer 1 Equal contributions Y.K. Nevertheless, they also consider its limitations, disruptions to practices, threats to privacy and security, and consequences of biases, misuse, and misinformation. However, opinion is split on whether ChatGPT's use should be restricted or legislated. Drawing on these contributions, the article identifies questions requiring further research across three thematic areas: knowledge, transparency, and ethics; digital transformation of organisations and societies; and teaching, learning, and scholarly research. The avenues for further research include: identifying skills, resources, and capabilities needed to handle generative AI; examining biases of generative AI attributable to training datasets and processes; exploring business and societal contexts best suited for generative AI implementation; determining optimal combinations of human and generative AI for various tasks; identifying ways to assess accuracy of text produced by generative AI; and uncovering the ethical and legal issues in using generative AI across different contexts. Abstract: The adoption of Information Systems (IS) is among the critical topics for IS research and practice. However, despite rich insights across IS literature streams, many IS implementation projects still struggle with user adoption and realising benefits. This paper argues that a knowledge gap exists because research has paid little attention to the definition, manifestations, and effects of adoption management in mandatory environments. The article proposes definitions and systematically reviews findings related to adoption management at the cross-section of the adoption and benefits management literature. The findings show that adoption management manifests across the two literature streams as constructs, models, and methods. While some articles examine these manifestations in the analysis, many discuss adoption management as an afterthought in the implications for practice in discussion sections, and few articles explicitly label it adoption management. We discuss these and other gaps and provide avenues for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Medical AI technologies promise to empower their users in managing their health. We develop a research model aiming to explain the role of user empowerment and resistance on users' continuous use intention of medical AI technologies. The model was tested with data from 306 users of the Left-Hand Doctor self-diagnosis chatbot in China. The analyses indicate that users value the emotional support, responsiveness and accessibility of the chatbot. These features provide a strong explanation of user empowerment which in turn supports continuous use intention. While resistance to medical AI technologies negatively affects continuous use intention, it does not weaken the positive effects of empowerment. The research contributes to our knowledge of what user empowerment means and how it can support sustainable engagement with medical AI technologies. It further guides developers to more comprehensively consider similar user experience elements and positive outcomes of AI technologies in other application areas. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems (IS) and their healthy use are becoming increasingly important in the digital work environment. The cognitive appraisal of an IS-enabled demand is decisive for whether IS use leads to positive or negative outcomes. This work investigates how gamification integrated into IS can support challenge appraisal and reduce threat appraisal of IS-enabled demands. We conduct an online experiment to examine the impact of gamification on appraisal. We simulate time urgency in a gamified IS and examine how challenge and threat appraisal develop among participants during the experiment. We examine the panel data with a Latent Growth Model and find that gamified IS does not initially reduce threat appraisal but reduces it over time. Challenge appraisal is not significantly higher among users working in gamified IS. That this hypothesiszed effect does not show in the data might require further research. Our paper contributes to a better understanding of the cognitive appraisal process in IS use research and identifies gamification as a valuable tool to positively influence the cognitive appraisal process. Abstract: Using mixed reality (MR) glasses for preoperative patient education (PPE) can help patients understand the purpose and risks of surgical procedures through informative visualizations. However, patients tend to be critical regarding the use of MR glasses in healthcare and often prefer the status quo of healthcare services provided. This study explores the resistance to MR technologies in PPE through the lens of the status quo bias theory by surveying n = 171 participants. We conducted a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis revealing configurations that provide a typological understanding of patient resistance. This allows healthcare stakeholders to take more targeted interventions to promote MR adoption. Notably, the results indicate that healthcare providers need to be transparent in communicating the benefits and drawbacks of using MR, as uncertainty costs are the main driver of resistance to MR glasses in PPE. Abstract: This paper examines how heterogeneous technologies impact the coordination of knowledge work in complex socio-technical settings. It is based on an in-depth field study of critical care practices characterized by intensive knowledge work and technological heterogeneity. We observe that heterogeneous technologies create workflow gaps within which health professionals adapt technology use to contingencies and local needs, prioritize interventions, and identify problems before they become detrimental to patient care. These adaptations provide opportu­ nities for health professionals to continuously align work across heterogeneous technologies and to accomplish broader professional and ideological goals. Our analysis shows that health pro­ fessionals use three coordination practices when working across heterogeneous technologies: controlling and enhancing information, reconstructing workflows, and circumventing re­ quirements. We theorize how these practices address coordination needs associated with het­ erogeneous technologies and discuss implications for knowledge work. We provide a more complete understanding of coordination practices in complex, socio-technical settings which contributes to both knowledge work and coordination literatures. Collapse

Abstract: This research investigates the impact of value alignment on physician resistance to electronic health record systems (EHRS) through the reduction of perceived threat to professional autonomy and perceived changes in work processes. Analyses of data collected from 104 US physicians using SmartPLS reveal that value alignment (i) directly impacts resistance to EHRS, (ii) influences resistance to EHRS use by reducing the perceived threat to professional autonomy, and (iii) influences perceived changes in work processes. Abstract: This study explores how using social networking sites (SNSs) to cope with stressors induced by a global pandemic (in this case, COVID-19) can have negative consequences. The pandemic has imposed particular stressors on individuals, such as the threats of contracting the virus and of unemployment. Owing to the lockdowns and confinements implemented to limit the spread of the pandemic, SNS use has surged worldwide. Drawing on Lazarus and Folkman’s theory of stress and coping, we consider COVID-19 obsession to be an adverse emotional response to the stressors brought about by the pandemic and emotional support seeking through SNS as a coping strategy. Furthermore, we identify SNS exhaustion as an adverse outcome of this form of coping. Finally, we analyze the intention to reduce SNS use as a corrective behavioral outcome to mitigate the negative effect of SNSmediated coping. The findings indicate that: 1) the threat of the COVID-19 disease and the threat of unem­ ployment drive COVID-19 obsession; 2) COVID-19 obsession contributes to emotional support seeking through SNS; 3) emotional support seeking through SNS exerts a positive effect on SNS exhaustion; 4) SNS exhaustion contributes to the intention to reduce SNS use. Our results advance Information Systems (IS) research by focusing on the use of Information Technology (IT) to cope with stressors that are essentially not IT-related; such research is largely absent from previous literature. Furthermore, our paper contributes to the increasing amount of literature on IT-mediated coping with stressors and reduced social media use. Collapse

Abstract: Owing to high functional complexity, trust plays a critical role for the adoption of intelligent decision support systems (DSS). Especially failures in initial usage phases might endanger trust since users are yet to assess the system's capabilities over time. Since such initial failures are unavoidable, it is crucial to understand how providers can inform users about system capabilities to rebuild user trust. Using an online experiment, we evaluate the effects of recurring explanations and initial tutorials as transparency measures on trust. We find that recurring explanations are superior to initial tutorials in establishing trust in intelligent DSS. However, recurring explanations are only as effective as tutorials or the combination of both tutorials and recurring explanations in rebuilding trust after initial failures occurred. Our results provide empirical insights for the design of transparency mechanisms for intelligent DSS, especially those with high underlying algorithmic complexity or potentially high damage.
