Abstract: While designing artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems, AI developers usually have to justify their design decisions and, thus, are accountable for their actions and how they design AI-based systems. Crucial facets of AI (i.e., autonomy, inscrutability, and learning) notably cause potential accountability issues that AI developers must consider in their design decisions, which has received little attention in prior literature. Drawing on self-determination theory and accountability literature, we conducted a scenariobased survey (n=132). We show that AI developers who perceive themselves as accountable tend to design AI-based systems to be less autonomous and inscrutable but more capable of learning when deployed. Our mediation analyses suggest that perceived job autonomy can partially explain these direct effects. Therefore, AI design decisions depend on individual and organizational settings and must be considered from different perspectives. Thus, we contribute to a better understanding of the effects of AI developers' perceived accountability when designing AI-based systems. Collapse

Abstract: Innovation in the public sector plays an important role in improving the quality of public services and addressing economic and societal challenges. Most of the previous research on innovations has focused on the private sector. How organizations may achieve ambidexterity for innovations in the public sector characterized by unique constraints has been largely underexplored. Platforms have emerged as key components in organizations’ ap­ proaches to innovation. Using an empirical study in a public sector organization, this study identifies a platformbased approach that can be used to achieve ambidexterity in balancing exploitative and exploratory innovations in the public sector. Organizations facing constraints pertaining to structure, risk, and value may benefit from considering their product/service development, process management, and value formulation through this approach. This study also identifies practices in platform development, appropriation, and control that contributed to the success of the platform-based approach. Collapse

Abstract: In response to the burgeoning threats of climate change to humanity, numerous governments, such as those of the United States and most European countries, have launched rollout programs for the distribution of smart metering technology (SMT). Despite this notable recent investment, questions of whether and why SMT adoption facilitates the reduction of households’ energy demands remain relatively unexplored. Building on cognitive dissonance theory, we propose a research model for SMT adoption, residential energy-saving behaviors, and moderating factors. We then empirically test the model using a rich household dataset from the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2016. Our results show that SMT adoption is positively associated with energy-saving behaviors, while energysaving motivations substantially moderate this association—a lower level of concern about saving energy / a higher level of concern about climate change amplifies this effect. Importantly, we find that SMT usage positively moderates this relationship, but this marginal gain decreases in technology usage intensity. Our findings contribute to the information systems literature by showing a consequence of new technology adoption along with the role of cognitive dissonance in promoting intended objectives and identifying potential moderating effects. We discuss actionable insights for policymakers and utility firms. Collapse

Abstract: The proliferation and adoption of phones and other emerging technologies in health care is significantly growing in Ghana. Though tapping into this technology innovation could tremendously improve health care in resource deficient settings, there is a dearth of research on adoption antecedents. Drawing strength from behavior studies anchored on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), our study proposed a model, and further sampled 386 respondents to predict mobile health adoption behavior. Empirical results of our study revealed that attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavior control, personal moral norm, and language all had a significant positive relationship with adoption intention. Furthermore, adoption intention was also revealed to have a significant positive relationship with behavior. And finally, Internet bandwidth was revealed to significantly moderate the relationship between adoption intention and actual adoption behavior. Based on the results, further insights for stakeholders and policy, implications for accelerating mobile health adoption, and suggestions for future research are subsequently delineated. Collapse

Abstract: Increasing advancements in digital technologies, especially in artificial intelligence, are changing the nature of services. Services no longer rely on the consumers making the first move, but instead, service providers can anticipate consumers' needs and address them proactively by so-called proactive services (PAS). Within this new service type, consumers may enable the service provider to decide upon the consideration, decision, and enactment of the service. In PAS, consumers assign these previously "owned" phases to the service provider and thereby, also devolve power to the provider. Thus, trust is an indisputable prerequisite for consumer acceptance. However, it is unclear how individual characteristics of PAS impact consumers' trust. Addressing this research gap, this research-in-progress paper proposes a Best-Worst scaling survey in which potential consumers of two exemplary PAS state their trust with respect to different PAS characteristics. Abstract: Telemedicine is not released into a social vacuum. In some communities - such as the underserved, low income, mostly minority community served by Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia (EMCP) - the social context presents the medical center with unique challenges centered on a strong community sense of historical discrimination. That context is manifested in people being less inclined to trust symbols of external authority and in their strong reliance on subjective norms. Analyzing 540 survey responses by EMCP emergency department (ED) patients shows that trust in the EMCP portal was the strongest predictor of its acceptance. Being an African American had no effect on portal acceptance compared to others in the community. Importantly, there was a negative interaction effect of subjective norms and trust on portal acceptance - meaning that increasing this trust can reduce the importance of subjective norms or, alternatively, that lower subjective norms may increase the importance of trust in determining acceptance. This moderation may have very practical implications for EMCP because, while it might be challenging for EMCP to change long established subjective norms, it is within their power to increase trust in the portal. Abstract: As the importance of services increases, so does the need for suitable information technology (IT) to support the exchange of resources in interactive value creation processes (co-creation). Engagement platforms (EPs) have been identified as a suitable IT solution, as they enable and foster value co-creation of heterogeneous actors. However, few guidelines exist on how to design for value co-creation on EPs. To address this problem, we employed the Design Science Research approach. We first conducted a literature review and then interviewed 24 experts from successful EP companies. As a result, we derived four design principles and evaluated them for further iterations. This study elaborates our findings and implications for practitioners and scholars seeking knowledge on how to design EPs resulting from three completed design cycles. Collapse

Abstract: Can mobile payment platforms (MPPs) elevate Sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) healthcare service quality (HSQ)? In a region home to more than one billion people yet beset by a paucity of services and infrastructure, mobile devices and platforms are rapidly gaining ground. Rising healthcare needs and costs along with the fact that more than 60% of SSA lives in areas nearly 1.5 miles away from paved roads that lead to hospitals and banks, accessibility to traditional financial services remains a serious concern. As Sub-Saharan hospitals increase billing access via mobile payment platforms, there is little understanding of whether and how mobile payment platforms influence healthcare service quality (HSQ).Drawing upon economic utility and trust perspectives, this study develops an integrative model to examine mobile payment platform utility’s impact on patient trust, commitment, and HSQ perceptions. The model is empirically tested using a survey of 527 patients from the West African country of Nigeria. Results reveal a distinct amalgam of MPP utility, trust, and commitment as antecedents to HSQ perceptions, thus generating important insights and contributing to the ongoing inquiry of how digital platforms in developing countries can influence socio-economic development. Overall, the results support the study’s hypotheses and underscore the important role of MPPs. Collapse

Abstract: Supplier engagement (SE) is generally regarded as an essential approach for firms seeking new product inno­ vation. However, in a social media context, is it true that the more supplier engagement there is, the better the new product design will be? This study explores the nonlinear effects of supplier engagement on new product innovation (NPI) performance in a social media context and further identifies the mechanisms through which knowledge sharing occurs and through which knowledge orchestration capability (KOC) is moderated. The re­ sults show the following. First, there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between supplier engagement and NPI performance. Second, SE positively impacts NPI performance, and knowledge sharing has an inverted U-shaped relationship with NPI performance. Further, when firms have a high-level rather than a low-level KOC, knowledge sharing has a significant mediating role. Finally, KOC positively moderates the inverted U-shaped relationship between knowledge sharing and NPI performance, and the inflection point of the inverted U-shaped curve is shifted upward when KOC is high.
