Abstract: In this editorial, we explore the role of IS in shaping the capacity to recover from exogenous shocks. Based on a synthesis of existing literature, we discuss the interplay between IS and resilience, as examined by various streams of research, and consolidate these insights under the banner of "digital resilience." Our exploration culminates in a new conceptual framework of digital resilience from which we formulate avenues for future research. Through this work, we aim to encourage and support further research and practical strategies focused on digital resilience, ultimately strengthening our collective capacity to navigate the diverse disruptions of our shared future.Yenni Tim is a senior lecturer in the School of Information Systems and Technology Management (SISTM), University of New South Wales (UNSW) Business School, Australia. Abstract: Digital transformation (DT) continuously reshapes and disrupts established industries. While DT has become a buzzworthy trend, many firms still struggle to advance their DT journeys. As such, we explore the drivers of DT, and the challenges managers encounter as DT is manifested in practice in traditional industries. By adopting a qualitative approach, we gain insight into senior managers’ perspectives on DT in the context of the Swedish forestry industry. Our results reveal that the drivers of DT in traditional industries hinge on organizational structures, innovation direction, and organizational identity being changed to prevail. Our study extends research on DT in traditional industries and highlights probable areas of concern that industry practitioners can probe during their organizations’ transformation journeys. Abstract: Digital technologies are revolutionizing the business world and giving rise to a new breed of entrepreneurs: digital entrepreneur. Digital entrepreneurs leverage digital platforms and technologies to create new business ventures and pursue entrepreneurial success. Despite the growing importance of digital entrepreneurship, the literature on this topic remains relatively fragmented on the key player driving digital entrepreneurship: digital entrepreneurs. To gain an understanding of how digital entrepreneurs are characterized in the current literature, this paper reviews the existing literature on digital entrepreneurship and characterizes digital entrepreneurs along several key dimensions. Adopting a systematic literature review approach, we analyzed 43 peer-reviewed papers in the fields of management and entrepreneurship to gain a comprehensive understanding of digital entrepreneurs. Our findings identify four prominent types of digital entrepreneurs, each with their corresponding digital entrepreneurial capability and entrepreneurial processes, and the enablers for their engagement in digital entrepreneurship. To move the field of digital entrepreneurship research forward, we suggest several research directions related to each of these dimensions. Collapse

Abstract: As we move along the ever-transforming world of digital technology and organizations, the perspective of how we view digital transformation (DT) also transforms. The episodic and continuous nature of changes requires an in-depth, nuanced temporal perspective. Through a case study on an incumbent maritime organization chasing new digital value propositions, we explore the flows of actions within DT. We discuss 1) DT as flows of action, 2) the challenges of planning and measuring DT, and 3) how resistance can spur action. Moving further, we argue that this view will enable future research on how to perform DT in a way that considers the convergence of flows of action. Collapse

Abstract: Global initiatives on climate protection and national sustainability policies are accelerating the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. Many electricity suppliers are engaged in efforts to monetize this transition with ‘green’ services and products, such as Green Electricity Tariffs. These promise customers that their supply includes a specific share of green electricity, yet since electricity suppliers often fail to deliver on those promises, many customers have lost trust in their suppliers. Further information asymmetries may not only exacerbate this loss of trust, but also spark distrust and lead to an overall feeling of ambivalence. Eventually, ambivalent customers may feel inclined to switch suppliers. To prevent this domino effect, electricity suppliers must eliminate ambivalence by increasing customer trust and reducing customer distrust. Here, we discuss how these challenges can be met with a customer loyalty program built on blockchain technology. We developed the program following a Design Science Research approach that facilitated refinement in four iteration and evalu­ ation cycles. Our results indicate that the developed customer loyalty program restores trust, reduces distrust, and resolves customer ambivalence by providing four features: improved customer agency, sufficient and veri­ fiable information, appropriate levels of usability, and unobstructed data access. Abstract: Machine learning (ML) technologies open up enormous potential to be unlocked through entrepreneurial activities in organizations, causing countless novel business models with ML at their core to emerge in the market. As ML technologies differ significantly from other digital technologies both in their characteristics and their effect on organizations, little is currently known about the complexities of the realization process for business models driven by ML and why only some organizations execute it successfully. By building on a qualitative study grounded on cross-industry insights from 20 expert interviews, this paper contributes to a greater understanding of the realization process by identifying ML-specific complications, before aiming to determine the underlying reasons for successful business model realization. We adopt a dynamic capabilities perspective and conceptualize eleven microfoundations that explicate how organizations build, implement, and transform business models driven by ML. Collapse

Abstract: There is widespread agreement in research and practice that data governance is an instrumental element to help organizations leverage and protect data. IS research has observed that our practical and our scientific knowledge of data governance remains limited, and the increasing ability for organizations to generate, acquire, store, transform, process and analyze data calls for us to further identify and address issues on the topic. Striving to contribute to answer this pressing need, we argue that understanding the nature and the implications of governance mechanisms is of high importance as it is these mechanisms that effectively instantiate data governance in an or­ ganization. Building on our experience preparing and teaching workshops to 102 executives on the topic, we adopt a position of engaged scholarship and provide a translational account of our pedagogical experience on data governance, highlighting four outstanding themes for IS research. We argue that these four themes—(1) embracing data governance without compromising digital innovation; (2) enacting data governance through repertoires of mechanisms; (3) moving away from data governance toward governing data; and (4) moving away from a view of data at rest to adopt a service-based perspective on data governance—are highly relevant for practice and research. In our view, studying these themes will contribute to inform practitioners who often struggle with the implementation of comprehensive data governance programs and frameworks. At the same time, the ability to leverage theory to study these themes can help research generate novel theoretical contributions on data governance, helping future research on the topic. Collapse

Abstract: Smart service systems are a network of people, technologies, as well as processes and rely on learning, adaptivity, and decision-making to provide smart services to their users. The complexity of designing smart service systems results in a plethora of potential implementation obstacles, often leading to an overly technical focus and resulting in isolated solutions. There is, therefore, a need for a guideline for companies that helps them facilitate the development of complex smart service systems. To this end, we apply action design research used in a multi-year design study for digital twins in the manufacturing industry. The resulting four-quadrant framework (domain, system design, organization, and ecosystem) can help researchers and companies guide the development of smart service systems or evaluate past progress. The evaluation of the framework shows that there might be dominant quadrants and certain paths in the framework, which we would like to investigate in further research. Abstract: Complementary assets play an important role in shaping an innovation’s commercialization success. In this paper, we broaden the locus of complementarities to examine the role of complementary technologies residing in the business ecosystems that are becoming an important source of value creation for innovating firms. We argue that, on one hand, complementary technologies help innovations create more value for their users. On the other hand, they can also limit the focal innovation’s value creation by exposing them to performance bottlenecks as the underlying technological architecture of the ecosystem evolves. We further extend the notion of specialization of complementary assets to ecosystems by considering complementary technologies that are specialized to a focal ecosystem and those that are available across multiple ecosystems. We highlight that, although the complementary technologies that are specialized to an ecosystem facilitate greater value creation, they are more likely to subject the focal innovation to performance bottlenecks. Evidence from 244,034 apps launched by software developers for Apple’s iPhone ecosystem during 2008–2015 offers strong support for our framework. In summary, the study sheds light on the value creation tradeoff for firms innovating in business ecosystems—the opportunities associated with leveraging complementarities and the challenges associated with managing technological interdependencies. Abstract: Data are the building blocks of the ongoing digital revolution, yet there are still many unresolved questions regarding their role in the study of information systems (IS), management, and innovation. As data become increasingly pervasive elements of socio-economic life, we ask whether IS needs to expand the ways in which it conceptualizes data and their role in business and society. This panel report summarizes discussions that took place in the inaugural workshop on data research. The workshop asked what is missing from research on data in IS from four well-known scholars whose work touches upon the topic in different ways. Three main themes emerged from the speakers' statements that were further discussed by the workshop participants: 1) the need to go beyond traditional ways of conceiving data, 2) the need to investigate the relationship between data and meaning, and 3) the need to study new data management and governance approaches. We present these research themes and connect them with future research directions. Collapse
