Abstract: The use of mobile health (mHealth) applications to easily track calorie intake and exercise behavior becomes more and more popular. However, research showed that mHealth apps could only be effective in supporting people in their weight loss if used regularly over a long period. Despite a significant amount of work examining the decision to continue to use mHealth apps, less is known about sources of negative user experiences that can act as barriers to long-term use. Drawing upon affordance theory, this study aims to fill this research gap by qualitatively analyzing app reviews from five popular weight loss apps. Our findings reveal nine causes of dissatisfaction that can have adverse effects regarding long-term mHealth app use for weight management. The results contribute to research and practice by shedding light on the barriers to the continued use of mHealth applications for weight management and how designers and developers can overcome these shortcomings. Abstract: We report a surprising experience with mobile technology: the lead author found herself seeing and acting differently while running over part of her usual running track with the exercise-tracking application ‘Strava’ on her phone, even without focal attention to the app. We apply the method of problematization to a detailed empirical account of this experience, in conjunction with a literature analysis of taken-for-granted assumptions underpinning research on ‘mobile technology use’. This reveals that, while the relationship of attention, perception, movement and technology was a key element of the surprise, these themes are not well accounted for in current IS literature. In response, we employ William Gibson's ecological theory of visual perception to reinterpret the empirical account and thereby build a new understanding of the human plus mobile technology that we term moving-with-technology. We introduce to IS: moving-with-technology as a new analytical perspective; the new phenomena of digital sub-species, digital-niches and asynchronous co-location; and stimulus for new ecologically oriented ‘mobile methods’. Moving-with-technology also has practical implications for urban planners who are using data from digital trace-making tools such as Strava in their decision-making, thereby generating what we call ecological feedback loops. Abstract: Merchant pictures are essential website elements in digital platforms. However, it is still unclear whether and how different pictures affect merchants’ market performance. We characterize the distinction of pictures from content (the type of objects in a picture) and composition (the arrangement of objects to make it compelling) two aspects. Specifically, we categorize picture content into three types, either brand, product, or environment. We construct a set of compositional features under the guidance of human visual perception theories to account for the effect of picture composition. With a panel dataset from a dailydeal platform, we find both content and composition can affect the sales of merchants. Composition tends to be the aggregate effect of compositional features instead of independently. Merchants of high brand awareness can benefit from displaying brand information as picture content. However, the effect of content will decrease with merchants’ time on the market and cumulative sales. Collapse

Abstract: Graphical information has been widely used in businesses and organizations to display, report and analyze financial information. If the graphical information is inadequately manipulated and employed like the distorted graphs, it may well mislead peoples’ judgment and hence lead their company/organization into a disaster. The study of Mather et al. (Accounting and Business Research 35(2), 147-159, 2005) shows that the graphical distortion of bar chart can be measured by using the relative graph discrepancy index (RGD). The purpose of this research is to find out what level of measurement distortion will mislead users by conducting an experimental study. Research results show that financial graphs tend to mislead users when they are distorted by over ±5 % of the RGD. This threshold should be employed as a means for auditing the related graph distortions. Collapse

Abstract: A lot of studies in the information systems, advertising, and marketing literature have shown that for the past two decades online banner ad click-through rate is decreasing steadily (Idemudia et al. 2007). To address this issue, we develop the Visual Perception Model (VP) for Online Target marketing and then conducted an experiment by manipulating the independent variables (i.e. perceived security of online banner ads and match between web user’s need and banner ad contents). The theoretical background for the VP Model is the Visual Perception Theories. The VP Model shows that perceived usefulness of online banner ads have a positive and significant effect on the intention to click online banner ads. Also, the VP Model shows that both perceived security of online banner ads and match between web user’s need and banner ad contents has a positive and significant effects on perceived usefulness of online banner ads. Abstract: Prior research on Internet advertising has focused on the input and process components of banner ad design, but fail to address the influence of visual display principles on the output component of banner ad design. This may account for the decreasing online banner ad click-through rates, which are significantly below 1%. Motivated by the lack of research on the influence of visual display principles on banner ad design, we have developed the Extended Advertising Network Model. The theoretical background for the Extended Advertising Network Model is the visual perception theories. The Extended Advertising Network Model provides guidelines on how to effectively design advertising network firms and banner ads. Also, the model encourages banner ad designers to pay equal attention to all the components that are involved in banner ad design in order to draw the attention of web users, thus increasing merchants and vendors’ revenues and online banner ad click-through rates. Abstract: Computer visualizations are all around us. In this paper we describe a design process in which we explore the development of a new visualization to aid managerial decision making. The ultimate goal of our design effort is to develop a visualization that allows for presenting most of the critical financial ratios used to describe a firm’s activity on a single computer display and dynamically. In doing so, we hope to enable managers to develop holistic and intuitive appreciations of such matters as how a business changes through time, how the flows of resources in healthy businesses differ from those in trouble, and how decisions about one aspect of a business affect others. Abstract: A home page is the gateway to an organization's Web site. To design effective Web home pages, it is necessary to understand the fundamental drivers of user's perception of Web pages. Not only do designers have to understand potential users' frame of mind, they also have at their choosing a stupefying array of attributes – including numerous font types, audio, video, and graphics – all of which can be arranged on a page in different ways, compounding the complexity of the design task. A theoretical model capable of explaining user reactions at a molar level should be invaluable to Web designers as a complement to prevalent intuitive and heuristic approaches. Such a model transcends piecemeal page attributes to focus on overall Web page perceptions of users. Reasoning that people perceive the cyberspace of Web pages in ways similar to their perception of physical places, we use Kaplan and Kaplan's informational model of place perception from the field of environmental psychology to predict that only two dimensions: understanding of information on a Web page, and the involvement potential of a Web page, should adequately capture Web page perception at a molar level. We empirically verify the existence of these dimensions and develop valid scales for measuring them. Using a home page as a stimulus in a lab experiment, we find that understanding and involvement together account for a significant amount of the variance in the attitude toward the Web page and in the intention to browse the underlying Web site. We show that the informational model is a parsimonious and powerful theoretical framework to measure users' perceptions of Web home pages and it could potentially serve as a guide to Web page design and testing efforts. Abstract: In this paper, we present a poststructuralist analysis of customer database technology. This approach allows us to regard customer databases as configurations of language that produce new and significant discursive effects. In particular, we focus on the role of databases and related technologies such as customer relationship management (CRM) in the discursive construction of both customers and customer relationships. First, we argue that organizations become the authors of customer identities, using the language of the database to configure customer representation. From this perspective, we can see the radical innovation that the customer database brings to the organizational construction of its market: the emergence of the individualized customer. The cultural novelty of the database—ignored by instrumental analyses of information technology—also requires a theoretical reconceptualization of the notion of virtual identity. Against existing positions, we posit a non-essentialist theory of virtual identity where the subject is constituted outside the immediacy of consciousness and thus emerges as the result of the technological and linguistic context in which it was produced. Second, we take our analysis of the discursive construction of the customer further by proposing that the emergence of the individualized customer was the prerequisite of the social construction of CRM as one-on-one affair between the customer and the organization. We suggest that this is a limited and limiting understanding of the concept of customer relationships especially if the one-on-one relationship is placed in a computer-mediated environment (CME). By mobilizing theories of play developed in the fields of human–computer interaction and consumer research, we propose that organizations would benefit from opening up the current discourse on CRM to include relationships between customers, customers and non-customers, and customers and the virtual organization.
