Abstract: With the increase of users’ social connections on social network services, their social circles become more diverse, which make it difficult to maintain their ideal images and thus lead to their lurking behaviors. Based on the self-discrepancy theory, an integrated model was proposed to link role-related constructs to lurking intention. Results based on data from 641 WeChat users show that social interaction anxiety and disappointment positively influence lurking intention. Role conflict and role overload positively influence social interaction anxiety and disappointment. Moreover, role overload positively moderates the relationship between role conflict and disappointment. Lastly, study implications and conclusions are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we address how the strategic choice of platform expansion design impacts the subsequent platform strategy. We identify two distinct approaches to platform expansion – platform bundling and platform constellations, which currently co-exist. The purpose of this paper is to outline the main characteristics of the two approaches and to identify the potential trade-offs associated with the selection of particular expansion mode. To this end, we construct the Platform Strategy Framework and apply it to two exemplary cases – WeChat, which functions as a feature bundling platform, and KakaoTalk, which evolves as platform constellation. Our analysis shows that there is not any preferable design as each approach has its positive and negative aspects, which need to be carefully outweighed when a platform owner designs its expansion strategy. Abstract: Technology acceptance has been well-studied in the IS field, however, technology dependency/addiction – a form of overadaptation (Porter and Kakabadse, 2006) – requires much-needed attention. This research provides a behavior control conceptual model intended to govern technology over-adaptation. The model also incorporates a behavior control mechanism framework by which solutions to technology dependency can be devised, implemented, managed, and measured. The behavior control conceptual model will facilitate future empirical research while the mechanism framework will inform practitioners as to deterrence mechanisms that can be used to reduce addictive tendencies. In the context of deterring adolescent dependency on text messaging, behavior control mechanisms are proposed through technology device control, “institutionalized” rules and regulations, and ultimately “intrinsic” cognitive beliefs. Abstract: This study examined how two communication media (e-mail and instant messaging) affected communication outcomes; and, more specifically, how these two media influenced the relationship between flow experience and communication outcomes. An experiment was conducted on a college campus using 94 student subjects. Communication outcomes were collected using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using MANCOVA (multivariate analysis of covariance) and discriminant analysis. Playfulness was used as a covariate. The analysis showed that the e-mail group appeared to have higher communication quality and effectiveness. A significant relationship was found to exist between flow and communication outcomes when the communication medium was e-mail; but no significant relationship was found to exist when the communication medium was instant messaging. Playfulness, a covariate, affected the relationship between the media type and communication outcomes. Collapse

Abstract: Computer mediated communication is rapidly assuming an integral role in the university education experience. This is especially true for auditorium-style classes, which may potentially include hundreds of students. In such classes, the instructor may seek a more efficient means of communicating. The two emerging audio-visual media distribution channels, podcast and webcast augment the existing communication tools, facilitating communication between instructors and students either in a one-to-one relationship or one-to-many, en masse (outside of the classroom). Podcasts are downloadable audio recordings available to listeners through the internet. Webcasts are available as streaming media files. Universities are beginning to recognize the merits of these new technologies, and are experimenting with them in the classroom; instructors are encouraged to podcast announcements, homework assignments, special directions, and even lecture segments. Some instructors have even adopted such techniques as their primary means (within the classroom or outside classroom) of communicating to students. However, the selection of appropriate communication media requires an understanding of the students’perceptions, preferences and receptiveness of these new technologies. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of podcasting and webcasting, and to examine student preferences between the different delivery richness of communication media. Background information regarding podcasting and webcasting is discussed. A conceptual model, based on media richness theory, is developed to explain student’s perceptions. For the testing of the model, a survey metric is introduced, and a research methodology is explained. Finally a conclusion and research limitations are discussed. Collapse
