Abstract: Marginalized communities globally encounter grand challenges such as lack of access to education, healthcare, and sustained livelihoods. Several initiatives to address these complex, global problems have resulted in fragmented solutions. Recognizing this, there have been several calls for the study of responsible innovation (RI) to address grand challenges. Digital platforms such as AirBnB, Uber and so forth have now become commonplace and are known to generate economic value but also face criticism for being exploitative and exclusive. Only a handful of studies show how similar platforms can innovate responsibly to serve marginalized communities by generating simultaneous economic and social value. To address this gap, our study examines the cases of two platforms that orchestrated ecosystems consisting of individuals from marginalized communities, government agencies, and other entities to provide physical, digital and societal solutions based on principles of RI. We contribute to the RI and IS literatures to show how RI solutions can be fostered through digital platforms to address grand challenges. The article provides empirical evidence of all four dimensions of the RI framework—anticipation, reflexivity, inclusion, and responsiveness - and their operationalization through digital platforms. This research lays the foundation for future studies at the intersection of RI and digital platforms literature. The study also provides practice insights on developing digital platform solutions for marginalized communities to address grand challenges and is useful to policymakers to formulate appropriate interventions. Abstract: Blockchain-based fan tokens provide token holders with certain rights, incentivizing fan engagement and decision-making within sports organizations. Despite the recent surge in interest, acceptance and technical advancement, a profound understanding of the technical, functional, and conceptual foundations of fan tokens is still lacking, necessitating further research and practical insights. Drawing on customer and fan engagement theory and utilizing a single case study approach, we analyzed the market-leading platform Socios for the issuance and operation of fan tokens. Our analysis yields a generic blockchain-based fan token framework that includes the constructs: 1) Trust and efficiency layer, 2) utility and 3) financialization features. The latter two constructs promote fan token holder empowerment. In addition, we extend the current definition of fan tokens to the context of blockchain. Our findings indicate that fan tokens are still in a nascent stage, requiring continued research and development. Collapse

Abstract: Businesses that follow the trend of flexible work arrangements with home offices and hybrid work models are increasingly utilizing desk sharing to allocate available desks in the office efficiently. In this work, we investigate the utilization of flexible work arrangements, specifically the implementation of desk sharing in hybrid work models. To optimize the occupancy rate of shared desks and simultaneously meet demand and save costs, it is crucial to have real-time knowledge of their availability which can be obtained by recording occupancy over time. We utilize the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology to develop a prototype solution for real-time monitoring of shared desks occupancy in hybrid work models. The proposed prototype is a low-cost solution utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technology consisting of a motion sensor and accelerometer that collect occupancy data and transmit it via Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN). Signal processing utilizing cloud computing is employed to enhance the quality and accuracy of the data, which is subsequently made available through a web dashboard. The prototype’s effectiveness is evaluated through a small-scale pilot deployment in a real-world environment over a two-week period, with reference values obtained during periods of non-use serving as a benchmark for the evaluation. Abstract: Organizations today need internal reporting channels to report illegal/unethical misconduct. For this purpose, organizations set up one or more - often digital - internal reporting channels. Persons/Employees who want to report misconduct, so-called whistleblowers, expose themselves to reprisals and therefore need trustworthy reporting channels which ensure ´Digital Trust´. Blockchain, a technology that overcomes the need for trust due to its properties of immutability and integrity of data, could be promising as underlying technology for a digital reporting channel which is recognized as trustworthy. In our research, we explored multiple perspectives relevant to a trustworthy digital reporting system. Applying design science research, we evaluated the current state of the art of (digital) reporting channels and developed a prototypical blockchain-based reporting solution called “Integrity@Inside”. Abstract: Servitization is a well-recognised phenomenon in the manufacturing industry. Business potentials are demonstrated mainly from the marketing perspective on servitization. However, increased digitalisation makes servitization interesting to other research areas. This paper applies the resource-based view (RBV) to argue how to value the data and explore its potential and impact on servitization. We examine the evolving role of information technology (IT), particularly of the Internet of Things (IoT), and the role of data in the servitization journey. This research is based on a longitudinal study of a product-oriented manufacturing company’s transformation towards servitization. The engagement with the company also includes the development of an IT platform that consolidates IoT and enterprise data, which enables managers to explore new data-based insights. Our goal is to investigate the organisation and in particular cross-functional effects of data-based insights and their impact on supporting strategic decision-making. The action design research (ADR) approach is applied to unfold the servitizing activities inside the organisation and extract the lesson learned into the joint domains of servitization and information systems research. First, we argued that exploring the value of data is becoming a more complex process. Rather than having one design perspective, technical concerns, business considerations, and operational purpose must be aligned to frame the value of data to support decision-making. Second, we discuss the emerging managerial implications, especially the role of IT in the transformation. A cross-functional team is a prerequisite to exploring complex transformation projects. Thus, managers must recognise the problematic situation and bootstrap the available organisational resources. Finally, we provide empirical evidence on how scholars and practitioners can address mutual interests by applying the ADR approach to a transformation project. In summary, servitizing a product-centric manufacturing firm to have a digital services business model is a transformation involving complex social and organisational relations. This study advocates resource-based analysis as a lens and demonstrates how IT and data as heterogeneous and imperfectly mobile resources create value for a product-oriented manufacturing company. However, a critical question remains on how to manage the expanding operational condition of a servitizing organisation and its business system to sustain its competitive advantage and win the digital market. Abstract: The increasing requirements for industrial production environments due to customer expectations, the implementation of batch size 1, and further automation of production processes are confronting companies with new challenges. In particular, the emergence of cyber-physical systems is influencing and complicating manufacturing processes by capturing an increasing amount of information within production facilities. Digital twins are an interdisciplinary technology that may solve these issues because they serve to monitor, control, and optimize cyber-physical systems by creating a digital representation of realworld objects. Existing concepts for digital twins usually only consider individual machines without their context. This is of limited use for production environments due to a multitude of different machines and associated sensor types. Abstract: The recent pandemic and resultant increase in clinical caseload have brought dialogue-based agents (DBAs) to the forefront of attention in the healthcare industry. The ability of these agents to accomplish a variety of sequential and related tasks within a single application software has made them more effortful and complex. While effort requirements and complexity of information systems are generally considered negative attributes, the potential effect of user effort investment on user perceptions and decisions is less investigated. Within the framework of goal systems theory, this study explores how perceived effort could be appropriated to enhance users’ positive perceptions and willingness to accept healthcare DBAs outputs. We find evidence for the positive role both in the perceived effort before and after the actual use of healthcare DBAs as well as in user goal magnitude and means-goal configuration on perceptions of usefulness and probability of considering outputs. Abstract: Crowdsourcing holds great potential: macro-task crowdsourcing can, for example, contribute to work addressing climate change. Macro-task crowdsourcing aims to use the wisdom of a crowd to tackle non-trivial tasks such as wicked problems. However, macro-task crowdsourcing is labor-intensive and complex to facilitate, which limits its efficiency, effectiveness, and use. Technological advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) might overcome these limits by supporting the facilitation of crowdsourcing. However, AI’s potential for macro-task crowdsourcing facilitation needs to be better understood for this to happen. Here, we turn to affordance theory to develop this understanding. Affordances help us describe action possibilities that characterize the relationship between the facilitator and AI, within macro-task crowdsourcing. We follow a two-stage, bottom-up approach: The initial development stage is based on a structured analysis of academic literature. The subsequent validation & refinement stage includes two observed macro-task crowdsourcing initiatives and six expert interviews. From our analysis, we derive seven AI affordances that support 17 facilitation activities in macro-task crowdsourcing. We also identify specific manifestations that illustrate the affordances. Our findings increase the scholarly understanding of macro-task crowdsourcing and advance the discourse on facilitation. Further, they help practitioners identify potential ways to integrate AI into crowdsourcing facilitation. These results could improve the efficiency of facilitation activities and the effectiveness of macro-task crowdsourcing. Collapse

Abstract: A holistic cost assessment of cloud computing ar-chitectures is currently hampered by the lack of assessment methods and the absence of a standardized and comprehensive total cost model. This creates uncertainty about cost developments of concrete scenarios and architectural changes. This article proposes a total cost of ownership model for cloud computing, covering the cost of adoption, procurement, migration, operation, usage, and exit. We evaluated our model in multiple application scenarios and against other models. Our model has shown to be substantially more comprehensive and applicable than other available models for cloud computing. Thus, our model can be useful both in practice and in research. Abstract: Smart services offer great innovation potential by incorporating digital technologies into non-digital value-creation processes. As smart service innovation poses significant challenges to organizations, existing research has contributed to understanding and addressing this phenomenon by developing various methods, tools, and processes. Yet, the academic community often still fails to bridge the "last mile" and help practitioners apply this knowledge in their specific application contexts. This article outlines how research can empower practitioners by systematically providing methodological knowledge for smart service innovation. We review and contrast existing methodologies and present a conceptual framework for value co-creation through smart service innovation methodologies. In addition, we identify six essential resource types required in these methodologies and propose emergent research avenues to guide future contributions to smart service innovation research.
