Abstract: In this preliminary report we describe ongoing research aimed at developing an effective method for giving business students the experience of using an API. Specifically, we seek a method that is accessible and useful even to students with no technical background. The approach we have taken is to teach students a small but sufficient amount of the Python language and then provide them with the API to a restaurant information system that we have developed specifically for the course. Student teams use the API to implement a simple information system tailored to the specific work flow of a restaurant of their choice. Anecdotal evidence suggests that students have found the programming experience useful and that further investigation of the proposed method is warranted. This paper describes the approach taken and the reasons behind the approach in enough detail so that the reader can assess its potential relevance to his or her own curriculum and find some guidance on how to develop similar approaches. Abstract: In today’s dynamic business environments, organizations are under pressure to modernize their existing software systems in order to respond to changing business demands. Service oriented architectures provide a composition framework to create new business functionalities from autonomous building blocks called services, enabling organizations to quickly adapt to changing conditions and requirements. Characteristics of services offer the promise of leveraging the value of enterprise systems through source code reuse. In this respect, existing system components can be used as the foundation of newly created services. However, one problem to overcome is the lack of business semantics to support the reuse of existing source code. Without sufficient semantic knowledge about the code in the context of business functionality, it would be impossible to utilize source code components in services development. In this paper, we present an automated approach to enrich source code components with business semantics. Our approach is based on the idea that the gap between the two ends of an enterprise system—(1) services as processes and (2) source code—can be bridged via similarity of data definitions used in both ends. We evaluate our approach in the framework of a commercial enterprise systems application. Initial results indicate that the proposed approach is useful for annotating source code components with business specific knowledge. Collapse

Abstract: We describe an empirical study of the creation of a Semantic Service Registry in the context of the Operations Support Systems (OSS) department of a telecom company, to address an emerging problem of finding the right services to build new business processes in a pool that steadily increases. We show how to obtain an ontology for the telecom domain to annotate services and thus benefit from semantic technologies to effectively find them based on description logics inference mapping. We designed and implemented a proof of concept for providing a matching degree even when the cardinality of the service elements of the query and the cardinality of the service elements being sought differ. This is relevant for web services reusability and flexibility. Our solutions are overviewed and a set of lessons learned are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: The Web extends today's modelbases—an important DSS component—by enabling their sharing and reusing over the information network. A modelbase with a formal, precise, and expressive framework will enhance the interoperation and benefit machine–human as well as machine–machine interactions. Therefore, this paper proposes a Web-based-compatible framework for modelbases, namely ODDM. “Model Ontology” and “Model Schema” are main components of the framework. Both components seamlessly interoperate by means of OWL Declarative Description (ODD). The classification of existing modelbase frameworks is presented. Abstract: This paper examines the potential for preserving Europe's cultural heritage in a digital world. After an extensive literature review on the economics of museums and the digitization of cultural heritage, it highlights national and international political initiatives to create cooperative cultural heritage systems. As a mean of achieving global integration while simultaneously keeping institutional independence, this work proposes 'Digital Autonomous Cultural Objects (DACOs)' as reference architecture. This paper illustrates the contribution of DACOs with two real-life projects serving as proof-of-concept. Finally, the paper offers some 'Lessons Learned' and an outlook to wider preservation of Europe's cultural heritage in the digital world. Collapse
