Abstract: Businesses that follow the trend of flexible work arrangements with home offices and hybrid work models are increasingly utilizing desk sharing to allocate available desks in the office efficiently. In this work, we investigate the utilization of flexible work arrangements, specifically the implementation of desk sharing in hybrid work models. To optimize the occupancy rate of shared desks and simultaneously meet demand and save costs, it is crucial to have real-time knowledge of their availability which can be obtained by recording occupancy over time. We utilize the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology to develop a prototype solution for real-time monitoring of shared desks occupancy in hybrid work models. The proposed prototype is a low-cost solution utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technology consisting of a motion sensor and accelerometer that collect occupancy data and transmit it via Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN). Signal processing utilizing cloud computing is employed to enhance the quality and accuracy of the data, which is subsequently made available through a web dashboard. The prototype’s effectiveness is evaluated through a small-scale pilot deployment in a real-world environment over a two-week period, with reference values obtained during periods of non-use serving as a benchmark for the evaluation. Abstract: In the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), digital platforms have recently received significant attention. Although IIoT platforms revolve around similar business objectives, they address various use cases and, thus, differ considerably in their architectural setup. While research has already investigated IIoT platforms from a business or design perspective, little is known about their underlying technology stack and its implications. To unveil different IIoT platform configurations and better understand their architectural design, we systematically develop and validate a taxonomy of IIoT platforms’ architectural features based on related literature, real-world cases, and expert interviews. On this foundation, we identify and discuss five IIoT platform archetypes (Allrounder, Device Controller, Data Hub, Service Enabler, Connector). Our findings contribute to the descriptive knowledge in this ambiguous research field while also elucidating the interplay of IIoT platforms’ architectural setup and their purpose. From a managerial viewpoint, our results may guide practitioners in comparing and selecting a suitable IIoT platform. Collapse

Abstract: Technological advances in electric energy system data acquisition systems, time synchronization, and cyber assets used in power system substations, distribution systems, and control centers offer new opportunities to dramatically improve the practice of monitoring, protection, control, and operation of the system. We can make the computer based new technologies smarter and more intelligent to fully automate the basic protection and control functions. The challenges posed to the system from the continuous deployment of renewable resources that are typically inverter interface resources require monitoring of the system at much higher rates and development of protection and control systems that can respond in much faster rates than for conventional systems and they are immune to the characteristics of the new system, namely reduced fault currents and suppressed negative and zero sequence components of the fault currents. We propose a new system that provides validated data at fast rates (once per cycle), protective relays that are immune to the effects of inverter interfaced generation, detect anomalies, and enable the continuous operation of relays and other functions even in the presence of hidden failures in instrumentation. This system will enable the operators to meet the challenges posed by the evolving power system and provides robust solutions to the new requirements. Collapse

In this paper, we explore the critical issues and challenges currently facing IoT adoption and implementation in order to identify areas that require further study. Abstract: This paper explores the potential of employing sensor enabled solutions to improve on waste monitoring and collection in public trash bins. Through a user-centered design approach, an inexpensive monitoring system developed and tested in pilot study. The system consists of wireless nodes that use ultrasonic sensors to measure the empty space in the bins, a sensor gateway that is based on Long Rage Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) protocol and cloud-based back/front end for data collection, analysis and visualization. The system was evaluated through a pilot test, where six outdoor trash bins were remotely monitored at a university campus and a number of stakeholders were observed and interviewed. The results show that the existing technologies are mature enough to be able to develop and implement inexpensive add-on sensors to exiting trash bins, and employing such a system can provide the necessary insights to optimize waste collection processes, to avoid overfilled bins, and to improve the experience of the citizens. Abstract: a b s t r a c tIn this paper I present the architecture of system that can be used for real time exploration and management of large medical volumetric datasets. The new state of the art solution presented in this paper is an example of visual data management system. System prototype evaluation proved that it is possible to use low-powered (and cheap) up-to-date mobile devices with programmable GPUs as the remote interfaces for exploration of large volumetric medical data. The implementation was done with high-level programming language that enables portability between different hardware models. The lack of lossy compression enables to display high quality medical images visualizations without any simplifications and noises in frequency domain. The prototype of system is capable to remotely render and send to a client (for example cell phone or tablet) rendered data with frequency 30 fps with limited resolution during interaction. One second after the interaction is finished client machine receives full resolution image. The evaluation of the system was performed on volumetric computed tomography angiography image with approximate size 512 3 voxels. Collapse

Abstract: Technological discontinuities can fundamentally alter the competitive dynamics of sectors of the economy: IT can create opportunities for those who are able to transform themselves, while simultaneously putting others out of business. Leadership is a key determinant of the outcome of an IT-enabled transformation, but there is limited research on the role of leaders in responding to such disruptions. This article explores the role of the leader in a period of technological change through an extension of the theory of transformational leadership. We illustrate the extended theory through a commercial printer, EarthColor. The commercial printing industry is in a strategic transition, characterized by consolidation and increasing cost pressures that drive profit margins down. We discuss how IT is responsible for the changing rules of competition in this industry, as well as the transformation of printing from a craft-based profession to a digitized business, from a traditional manufacturing “production” industry to a digital information management business. The article documents the experiences of EarthColor and the leadership of its CEO who successfully navigated an industry upheaval precipitated by IT. We generalize the results of our research to our extension of transformational leadership theory that explicitly incorporates the demands of ITenabled transformations. Collapse

Abstract: In this study, we seek to better understand the value of information technology (IT) in supply chain contexts. Grounded in the resource-based theory in conjunction with transaction cost economics, we develop a conceptual model that links three IT-related resources (backend integration, managerial skills, and partner support) to firm performance improvement. The model differs from previous studies by proposing a moderating effect of competition on the resource-performance relationships. Using data of 743 manufacturing firms, our analysis indicates significant contribution of IT to supply chains, which is generated through development of the digitally enabled integration capability and manifested at the process level along the supply chain. The technological resource alone, however, does not hold the answer to IT value creation. In fact, managerial skills, which enable adaptations on supply chain processes and corporate strategy to accommodate the use of IT, are shown to play the strongest role in IT value creation. Furthermore, backend integration and managerial skills are found to be more valuable in more competitive environments. While commodity-like resources have diminishing value under competition, integrational and managerial resources become even stronger. Overall, our results shed light on the key drivers of IT-enabled supply chains, and provide insights into how competition shapes IT value. Collapse

Abstract: In an organization, a well devised disaster recovery plan is not only crucial in the information recovery process, but also vital in the quest to sustain daily operations. While prior research has discussed many recovery sites options, assessment of recovery site communication paths and their associated complexity is still limited in regard to the evaluation of disaster recovery (DR) models. Using the scale-free degree distribution formula, the authors present a methodical discussion concerning the network characteristics of various disaster recovery options. This study marks a pioneering effort in the DR field by applying the scale-free degree distribution formula to assess the network complexity index and overall model failure points. In addition, a modified hot model employing host virtualization designed especially for small and medium size businesses is presented. This method is particularly advantageous to small and medium size businesses as it leverages inexpensive commercial PC hardware. Collapse
