Abstract: Information systems development (ISD) requires dynamic and flexible ways of working, particularly when developing requirements in collaboration with customers. Although prior research has acknowledged the importance of objects to support ISD practices, there has been a lack of frameworks to help discern the multiple overlapping roles objects play to support requirements development in a variety of ways throughout an ISD project. This paper explores and theorizes this phenomenon by leveraging multiplexity as a theoretical lens to analyze an extensive qualitative data set from a case study at a Swiss multinational banking software provider. Results show how diagrams and prototypes both play the roles of epistemic, activity, boundary, and infrastructure objects as a reflection of how they are used in requirements development. Our analysis articulates how two classical requirements specifications play multiple overlapping roles to support dynamic and flexible ISD practices. Abstract: Current state-of-the-art artificial intelligence struggles with accurate interpretation of out-of-library (OOL) objects. One method proposed remedy is analogical reasoning (AR), which utilizes abductive reasoning to draw inferences on an unfamiliar scenario given knowledge about a similar familiar scenario. Currently, applications of visual AR gravitate toward analogy-formatted image problems rather than to computer vision data sets. The Image Recognition Through Analogical Reasoning Algorithm (IRTARA) approach described herein shows how AR can be leveraged to improve computer vision in OOL situations. IRTARA produces a word-based term frequency list that characterizes the OOL object of interest. To evaluate the quality of the results of IRTARA, both quantitative and qualitative assessments are used, including a baseline to compare the automated methods with human-generated results. Fifteen OOL objects were tested using IRTARA, which showed consistent results across all three evaluation methods on the objects that performed exceptionally well or poorly overall. Collapse

Abstract: We conducted a field experiment to compare the effects of information systems (IS) supporting reflective disclosure and information democratization on the sustainability footprint of a routine organizational work practice, paper printing. We find that both sensemaking processes lead to employees reducing their printing; however, the processes are interchangeable and do not mutually reinforce each other’s effects. This finding contrasts a latent assumption of prior research about a co-dependence between reflective disclosure and infor­ mation democratization, and suggests organizations have a choice in how they can design and use IS to help employees make sense of different possibilities for more eco-efficient work. Abstract: Wikis are ubiquitous in organisational and private use and provide a wealth of textual data. Maintaining the currency of this textual data is important and difficult, requiring large manual efforts. Previous approaches from literature provide valuable contributions for assessing the currency of structured data or whole wiki articles but are unsuitable for textual wiki data like single sentences. Thus, we propose a novel approach supporting the assessment and improvement of the currency of textual wiki data in an automated manner. Grounded on a theoretical model, our approach makes use of data retrieved from recently published news articles and a language model to determine the currency of fact-based wiki sentences and suggest possible updates. Our evaluation conducted on 543 sentences from six wiki domains shows that the approach yields promising results with accuracies over 80% and thus is well-suited to support assessment and improvement of the currency of textual wiki data. Abstract: The current study sought to extend the Affective Technology Acceptance (ATA) model to human-robot interactions. We tested the direct relationship between affect and technology acceptance of a security robot. Affect was measured using a multi-method approach, which included a self-report survey, as well as sentiment analysis, and response length of written responses. Results revealed that participants who experienced positive affect were more likely to accept technology. However, the significance and direction of the relationship between negative affect and technology acceptance was measurement dependent. Additionally, positive and negative sentiment words accounted for unique variance in technology acceptance, after controlling for self-reported affect. This study demonstrates that affect is an important contributing factor in human-robot interaction research, and using a multi-method approach allows for a richer, more complete understanding of how human feelings influence robot acceptance. Abstract: Live streaming has become an important feature on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. More and more entrepreneurs (content creators) are competing in live streaming platforms like Twitch to maximize the attention they receive from consumers (viewers). In this competitive landscape, it is crucial for entrepreneurs to develop and provide new compelling content that can maximize the consumers' attention and aid the discovery of their content. We adopt an exploration-exploitation framework and assess the four strategies these new entrepreneurs could use to attract viewership and position themselves on Twitch: exploration, exploitation, learning from viewers, and their neighbor streamers. We combined the natural language processing techniques with theory-driven measures to accomplish this. Abstract: Unlike other assets, data’s value increases when it is shared and reused. Whereas organizations have traditionally exchanged data vertically with other actors along the value chain, we observe that they increasingly share complementary data assets with others, even at times with their competitors, to address business and societal challenges. Research on these new forms of horizontal data sharing and the emerging data ecosystems is still scarce. Building on the theory of communities of practice, we study a pioneer data sharing community comprising more than 20 multinational companies that developed an innovative approach to pool data management efforts. We derive eight design principles for horizontal data sharing, which we cluster according to the following dimensions: domain of interest, shared practice, and community. By offering prescriptive design knowledge, our findings make an important contribution to the emerging literature on cross-company data sharing. Our research also provides practitioners with actionable insights on how to establish and operate data sharing communities effectively. Collapse

Abstract: Social media can be valuable for extracting information about an event or incident on the ground. However, the vast amount of content shared, and the linguistic variants of languages used on social media make it challenging to identify important situational awareness content to aid in decision-making for first responders. In this study, we assess whether pretrained models can be used to address the aforementioned challenges on social media. Various pretrained models, including static word embedding (such as Word2Vec and GloVe) and contextualized word embedding (such as DistilBERT) are studied in detail. According to our findings, a vanilla DistilBERT pretrained language model is insufficient to identify situation awareness information. Fine-tuning by using datasets of various event types and vocabulary extension is essential to adapt a DistilBERT model for real-world situational awareness detection. Collapse

Abstract: This study theorizes the role of social signals in overcoming the motivation, coordination, and integration challenges in a hybrid peer production community, WikiTribune. WikiTribune was a collaborative journalism project that combined elements of firm-based production with that of commons-based peer production. Empirical data (article metrics, project documentation, and user communications) was used to examine the first 18-months of building and developing the collaborative journalism platform and community. The study's primary contribution is a social signaling model that extends the theory of commons-based peer production and presents three constructs that inform the socially productive behavior in these communities. These constructs (1) system signals, (2) normative signals, and (3) behavioral signals are theorized to shape user engagement through the different levels of project participation. The alignment/misalignment of these signals with project strategy produce positive or negative outcomes. The social signaling model seeks to explain how challenges are overcome and advantages leveraged in commons-based peer production, in both pure and hybrid forms. Collapse

Abstract: Many organisations embrace crowdsourcing to enhance innovation, problem-solving and value creation. While crowdsourcing in the past has been limited to just one organisation, crowdsourcing can be enhanced through collaborative practices that include sharing resources and value exchange in a 'crowdsourcing ecosystem'. However, the factors that influence the emergence of a crowdsourcing ecosystem are not yet well understood. To better understand these factors, our paper focuses on the emergence phase of crowdsourcing ecosystems. We conducted a case study of not-for-profit sector collaborative crowdsourcing projects to identify the internal and external influencing factors. We identify four major categories -preparedness, challenges, scope, and risks, along with 23 sub-categories. We believe our findings might be helpful for scholars and practitioners regarding the effective design of collaborative initiatives for crowdsourcing. Collapse
