Abstract: To sustain competitive advantage in dynamic business environments, organizations have to constantly adapt, innovate, and recombine their business models. As some configurations of business model design options are more successful than others, it is crucial to have a holistic understanding of the (current) solution space of those options and their dependencies. To be aware of and manage the set of possible design options, one can rely on classification tools, including taxonomies, typologies, and classification schemes. Given the availability of several tool types, different underlying assumptions for each type need to be considered when designing and applying a tool. Following a descriptive literature review approach, this paper structures the diverse body of classification research by presenting a repository of tools and deriving an analytical grid to disclose the similarities and differences between selected tool types. Thereby, this paper (1) raises awareness for the plurality of tools and their underpinning concepts, (2) provides a status quo overview across tool types, and (3) derives design-relevant knowledge for the tools, points to current challenges, and paves the ground for future research on the building, evaluation, and use of this class of tools. Abstract: Wearable devices to detect changes in health status are increasingly adopted by consumers, yet hospitals remain slow to assimilate these devices into clinical practice. Despite the clear benefits of capturing clinical information in acutely ill patients, such technology remains difficult to implement in emergency medicine. To improve adoption, barriers must first be removed. In our technical feasibility and acceptability trial, we studied the deployment of a wearable wireless biosensor that collects physiological data. We enrolled 44 adult patients receiving care in an emergency department observation unit. After we consented patients for participation, we applied biosensors to their chest and collected basic demographic and clinical information. We then collected biosensor data on an isolated system and measured patient experience via an exit survey. Throughout this process we documented and studied technical challenges. Overall, the technology was feasible to deploy in the emergency department observation unit and was acceptable to participants. Such technologies have tremendous future operational and clinical implications in settings ranging from emergency to home-care. Collapse

Abstract: The Internet of things (IoT) is emerging as an integrated set of digital innovations with the potential to unleash unprecedented opportunities and create significant challenges from both technological and societal perspectives. The IoT’s emergence signals many valuable opportunities (particularly for information systems (IS) scholars) to conduct scholarly inquiries. We posit that, since the IS discipline operates at the intersection of information technologies’ (IT) social, business, and technical aspects, IS scholars have a unique capacity to understand and contribute to advancing research on this new topic and associated phenomena. We outline the IoT’s distinctive attributes and their implications for existing IS research traditions. Furthermore, we highlight some illustrative research perspectives from which IS scholars can study the IoT. We highlight a research agenda for IS in two different ways. First, we discuss four IS characteristics that change based on IoT elements: 1) the physio-digital continuum, 2) multi-level exploration of IS, 3) composite affordance, and 4) heterogeneity. Second, we discuss the ways in which the IoT opens up research opportunities based on its impact on four major thematic domains: 1) organizations, 2), technology, 3) individuals, and 4) society. Abstract: Workplaces develop more and more to digital workplaces. However, this may lead to technostress. An understanding of the profiles of technologies used at the digital workplace, their interplay, and how they influence technostress is valuable as it can assist developers of technologies and designers of workplaces to prevent technostress. Therefore, we analyze literature and conduct expert interviews to identify ten characteristics of digital technologies that relate to technostress. By analyzing data from 4,560 employees, we evaluate the characteristics. Furthermore, we develop characteristic profiles of multiple technologies used at the respondent's digital workplace. Lastly, we investigate their influence on technostress creators using structural equation modeling. We find that the different portfolios of technology profiles influence technostress creators in different manners. Our contributions are identifying additional characteristics of digital technologies, showing the importance of investigating workplaces as a whole, and highlighting design opportunities for health-oriented workplaces that alleviate technostress. Abstract: Wireless networks are becoming the norm in the society, where hotspots afford users access to the internet through mobile devices. Unknown wireless networks, open public networks with unknown identity, pose threats as hackers can gain unauthorized access to users’ private information stored in their mobile devices. Despite the imminent dangers, individuals continue to use these networks. This study explicates a self-regulation theory model to investigate the antecedents of deficient self-regulation (DSR). We posit that both habit cues and information security experiential factors influence DSR, leading to habitual use of unknown wireless networks. The results show that perceived attachment, perceptions on privacy risk, and information security self-efficacy significantly influence DSR, which subsequently influences habitual use of unknown wireless networks. This study contributes to the literature on self-regulatory theory and privacy, and also provides implications for managers in dealing with vulnerabilities posed by employees using private or corporate mobile devices on unknown wireless network. Abstract: Digital Transformation (DT) is expected to have a massive impact on different branches and even societies. In the manufacturing industry, value creation processes change as information and communication technologies merge with production processes. The change may enable efficiency gains and new business models. However, many firms still struggle to drive their digital transformation forward. To understand the barriers which hinder or even stop DT is essential for the successful transformation. Our study aims at identifying the barriers on the basis of 46 expert interviews. These practical insights are further used to develop a research agenda. To determine the research gaps, we conduct a literature review on the topics mentioned by the interviewees. Thus, we contribute by first of all identifying major barriers which can support firms by reflecting their DT. Moreover, we give an outlook for researchers on possible future exploration. Abstract: This paper examines how American teens conceptualize the term “data” in the context of social and mobile media like Instagram and Snapchat, or text messaging and cell phone video. Using interview and ethnographic data from a series of interviews with teens, 11 to 18 held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania public libraries over 2016-2017, we report findings about how teens learn about data through the use of social media platforms, the creation of mobile media, and the ownership of mobile devices; the implications that using networked platforms and wireless technology has for contemporary understandings of data literacy; and finally, what this means for teaching and researching the acquisition of data skills. The paper presents findings about how teens learn and acquire knowledge about the interactive and social processes of the data life cycle in public spaces and in online platforms, particularly learning about data awareness through sharing, aging, and owning mobile computing devices.
