Abstract: Virtual influencers on social media are an intriguing phenomenon on the rise. They are computergenerated characters that attract a large number of followers and audiences who interact and engage with virtual influencers. Audience engagement with virtual influencers is an interesting phenomenon; yet little is known about the motivation and essence of such engagement. This research takes a qualitative approach of netnography to study audience engagement with virtual influencers. Content analysis on audience comments left on three virtual influencers' Instagram accounts (including Miquela, Noonoouri, and Guggimon) is conducted. Four major content themes emerge in audience comments: emotional attachment, source admiration, novelty, and expertise. We propose a conceptual model that postulates the impacts of these factors on engagement, moderated by the anthropomorphism of virtual influencers. This research reveals insights into drivers of audience engagement with virtual influencers, providing a theoretical model and practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: This methodological paper discusses the ethical and power-based implications of conducting remote and participatory research in a refugee camp in Malawi. This community-engaged project focused on education and technology. Half of the research team lives in Canada and half in the Dzaleka Refugee Camp. This paper reflects on this study, with a focus on remote partnership, team building with community researchers, and the use of digital tools to coordinate and manage data collection and analysis. Abstract: The facilitation of information technology has led to the rapid development of online-to-offline commerce, and this mode is attracting increasing businesses to enter the market. Its unique on-demand features affect con­ sumers’ shopping behaviors. This study uses a difference-in-difference approach with propensity score matching and machine learning approaches to examine the impact of a new giant online-to-offline entrant on consumers’ ordering and spending behavior. We find that overall, the new entrant has a negative impact on consumers’ ordering and spending from the perspective of existing providers. This negative impact is amplified if the con­ sumers are highly engaged on the platform. However, the new entrant effect is reduced if the providers use inhouse rather than outsourced deliverymen or consumers have a relatively long distance from the new entrant. Furthermore, the new entrant effect is altered if the platform implements technological innovation. On a provider level, the new entrant has a direct negative impact on consumers’ ordering and spending from homogenous providers; however, a positive spillover effect is observed in terms of increasing consumers’ spending on het­ erogeneous providers. The direct effect occurs immediately, while the spillover effect appears in a time-lagged pattern. On a product level, we find that the new entrant negatively affects consumers’ ordering and spending on substitute products also sold by the new entrant, but that their spending on non-substitute products is boosted. Our findings provide decision support for the new entrant and existing providers to expand the market to stimulate consumers’ purchase from both, to enhance their financial performance. Collapse

Abstract: A well-known approach to managing and controlling workflows in organizations is the workflow management system (WFMS). Recently, approaches utilizing augmented reality headsets as WFMS front ends have been discussed, enabling higher efficiency, effectiveness, and usability for certain application scenarios. However, existing design-oriented approaches lack tangible guidance for implementation. A well-known approach to address such knowledge gaps is a reference architecture, which inter alia reduces development times and risks and facilitates collaboration between developers. Based on an existing tentative design theory for an augmented reality-based WFMS front end, we contribute a reference architecture containing an extended design theory, user interface design, and UML models for use cases, components, classes, and sequence flows. The reference architecture was successfully operationalized in a prototype and positively evaluated via a survey of respective users. Collapse

Abstract: This research contributes to the knowledge of how Information Systems (IS) researchers can iteratively intervene with practitioners to co-create instructional programs with a framework designed for fast-paced, rapidly changing IS fields such as cybersecurity. We demonstrate how complex fields, such as cybersecurity, have the need for a skilled workforce that continues to rapidly outpace supply from universities. IS researchers partnering with practitioners can use this research as an exemplar of a method to design, build, and evaluate these innovative co-curricular IS programs. Moreover, we find these co-curricular IS programs are essential to upskilling students, integrating training on the latest tools, systems, and processes in these rapidly evolving disciplines. Abstract: Increasingly firms seek and employ open source software (OSS) developers using digital platforms (e.g., LinkedIn and GitHub). OSS developers display their skills in a variety of ways on these platforms to attract firms. However, it remains unclear whether all OSS developer behaviors influence an OSS developer's firm mobility in the same way. Using an impression formation lens we examine how OSS developer behaviors enacted in digital platforms lead to firm mobility. Furthermore, we consider how an OSS developer's access to IT infrastructure may alter these relationships. We propose an archival data study to better understand these relationships. Implications of this study exist for the impression formation theoretical lens, OSS developers, firms that employ them, and the digital platforms that connect the two parties. Collapse

Abstract: Emerging sustainable capital markets are crucial in reaching global climate goals. These markets’ credibility depends on the trustworthiness of data used to report the green impact of projects financed by sustainable financial instruments such as green bonds. To ensure credibility and thereby support these types of markets, the information systems field has the potential to create designs that leverage emerging technologies (in our case, blockchain) for green bond reporting. In this paper, we employ a design science research method to derive a set of design principles. These design principles discuss the most relevant blockchain concepts and reflect the characteristics of today’s green bond process. Through an artificial evaluation and demonstration of the design principles, we report on how to make informed design decisions to develop blockchain applications for green bond reporting. Abstract: Human and material agency have been investigated in the IS literature to understand how technology and humans influence each other. Some framings of agency treat humans and technology symmetrically, some privilege the agency of humans over technology, and others do not attribute agency to either humans or non-humans. We argue that with the new generation of technologies, such as AI, the notion of agency needs to differentiate between the actions of AI from that of traditional information systems and humans. We introduce the dimensions of agency to differentiate agencies while not privileging any actor. We illustrate the application of dimensions by using it as a lens to study the case of a technician using an AI solution for screening patients for early-stage breast cancer. Through the use of the dimensions of agency we illustrate how the influence of AI over human practice, such as screening for early-stage breast cancer, is higher than the influence of traditional technology. We discuss our contribution to the theory of agency and conclude with a discussion on potential practical applications of the framework. Collapse
