Abstract: Content analysis traditionally involves human coders manually combing through text documents to search for relevant concepts and categories. However, this approach is time-intensive and not scalable, particularly for secondary data like social media content, news articles, or corporate reports. To address this problem, the paper presents an automated framework called Automated Deductive Content Analysis of Text (ADCAT) that uses deep learning-based semantic techniques, an ontology of validated construct measures, a large language model, human-in-the-loop disambiguation, and a novel augmentation-based weighted contrastive learning approach for improved language representations, to build a scalable approach for deductive content analysis. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach to identify firm innovation strategies from their 10-K reports to obtain inferences reasonably close to human coding. Collapse

Abstract: We explore how the initial market positioning of entrepreneurial ventures shapes how they professionalize over time, focusing specifically on the development of functional roles. In contrast to existing literature, which presumes a uniform march toward professionalization as ventures scale and complete developmental milestones, we advance a contingent perspective, distinguishing between the development of external interface functions (marketing & sales and customer development) and internal process functions (accounting, human resources, and finance). Specifically, we argue that positioning in an unconventional market space raises demand for external engagement that focuses ventures’ attention and resources toward developing external interface roles. At the same time, such unconventional ventures are less apt to elaborate their internal process roles relative to more conventional peers. We test these predictions using a novel longitudinal data set on the internal organizations of 3,748 U.S.-based entrepreneurial ventures. In contrast to common assumptions of convergent professionalization, our theory and findings advance the perspective that ventures pursue divergent professionalization paths based on their initial market positioning as they scale up. Abstract: The internet and social media are constantly evolving and providing innovations for communication. Persuasive communication, like advertisements, can be adapted to peoples' personal preferences and desires based on tracked data. Emotions have been found to play an important role within persuasion. Based on theoretical assumptions of framing and affective priming, we hypothesize different effects of positive and negative messages and mood within social media advertising. To investigate the reception of ads regarding their persuasiveness in sustainability campaigns we conducted an online experiment using a 2x2 between design (N=147) measuring ad evaluation and behavioral intention. Our findings revealed that wording can be an influential factor in persuasive messages towards more sustainability. Positive framing led to a better ad evaluation than negative wording. However, behavioral intention was not affected and there was no enhancing effect of recipients' environmental awareness. Collapse

Abstract: In most practical prediction problems, such as regression and classification, the different types of prediction errors are not equally costly in the decision-making process. Although there exist numerous real-world costsensitive regression problems, ranging from loan charge-off forecasting to house price predictions, the literature on cost-sensitive learning mainly focuses on classification and only a few solutions are proposed for regression problems. These regressions are typically characterized by an asymmetric cost structure, where over- and underpredictions of a similar magnitude face vastly different costs. In this paper, we present a one-step boosting method (OSB) for cost-sensitive regression. The proposed methodology leverages a secondary learner to incorporate cost-sensitivity into an already trained cost-insensitive regression model. The secondary learner is defined as a linear function of certain variables deemed interesting for cost-sensitivity. These variables do not necessarily need to be the same as in the already trained model. An efficient optimization algorithm is achieved through iteratively reweighted least squares using the asymmetric cost function. The obtained results become interpretable through bootstrapping, enabling decision makers to distinguish important variables for cost-sensitivity as well as facilitating statistical inference. Applying different cost functions and various initial cost-insensitive learning methods on several public datasets consistently yields a significant reduction in the average misprediction cost, illustrating the excellent performance of our approach. Abstract: User generated videos are the most prevalent online products on social media platforms nowadays. In this context, thumbnails (or cover images) serve the important role of representing the video content and attracting viewers' attention. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of cover images on the Bilibili video-sharing platform, the Chinese counterpart to YouTube, where content creators can upload videos and design their own cover images rather than using automatically generated thumbnails. We extracted four components -snapshot, background, text overlay, and face -that content creators use most often in cover images. We found that the use of different components and their combinations varies in cover images for videos of different duration. The study sheds light on human input into video representation and addresses a gap in the literature, as video thumbnails have previously been studied mainly as the output of automatic generation by algorithms. Abstract: A growing body of research documents that audiences reward organizations perceived to be authentic with positive evaluations. In the current work, we adopt a mixed-methods approach—using data collected from Glassdoor.com and two experiments—to establish that perceptions of authenticity are elicited by perceived congruence between an organization’s stated values (i.e., the values it claims to hold) and its lived values (i.e., values members perceive as embodied by the organization), which in turn lead to more positive organizational evaluations. We then explore the conditions under which audiences are less likely to respond favorably to organizational authenticity, finding that the positive effects of stated-lived value congruence on evaluations are attenuated when audiences have a lower preference for stated values. Abstract: We conducted a field experiment to compare the effects of information systems (IS) supporting reflective disclosure and information democratization on the sustainability footprint of a routine organizational work practice, paper printing. We find that both sensemaking processes lead to employees reducing their printing; however, the processes are interchangeable and do not mutually reinforce each other’s effects. This finding contrasts a latent assumption of prior research about a co-dependence between reflective disclosure and infor­ mation democratization, and suggests organizations have a choice in how they can design and use IS to help employees make sense of different possibilities for more eco-efficient work.
