Abstract: In the rapidly evolving digital era, firms need to innovate their business models (BMs) to thrive and benefit from new digital technologies. While digital BM innovation (DBMI) can create competitive advantage through differentiation, firms often struggle to create and extract value from digital technologies. In this paper, we analyze 41 cases of BM change and identify three configurations that lead to DBMI and two configurations that do not. These configurations illustrate the BM elements in which digital technologies are used for DBMI and explain how firms use digital technologies for strategic innovation. Combined with existing research on DBMI, this research provides a missing piece of the puzzle to connect specific technologies in the BM to implement a digital business strategy and undergo a digital transformation. For practical purposes, the findings suggest three alternative strategies for DBMI that identify which elements need to be changed together to achieve DBMI. Collapse

Abstract: We need innovations that enable a sustainable economy and sustainable private consumption to meet the grand challenges of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As an essential source of innovation, startups play a crucial role in improving sustainability by creating innovative and sustainable products and services as part of their business models (BMs). Since BMs are at a firm's core, BMs are a decisive factor that influences whether startups fail or thrive; we analyze the success factors of sustainable BMs. We interviewed 16 experts from 15 startups implementing sustainable BMs based on digital technologies and one incubator specializing in sustainability. We identify six success factors representing tensions in digital BM design that entrepreneurs need to address. Our analysis shows how the design of sustainable digital BMs differs from regular digital BMs and how the tensions affect the success of startups. For established firms, the results guide BM design and technology use. Collapse

Abstract: Considered a new paradigm in healthcare, AI is expected to change diagnostic medicine in the coming decades. However, its future is still uncertain -partly because it is an emerging technology being gradually applied to a mature field of medicine. We conducted a global cross-sectional survey with more than 1,400 authors of recent scientific publications indexed by the Web of Science to foresee the future of AI in diagnostic medicine. Most respondents expect AI to change diagnostic medicine in this decade radically. In this period, the two most likely outcomes are reduced screening costs and increased diagnostic reliability. X-ray diagnosis and heart rhythm interpretation are the two diagnostic tools most likely to be integrated with AI. The two main barriers are the difficulty of incorporating it into clinical practice and the ethical-regulatory issues. Respondents' expectations align with the literature and suggest that AI may substantially change diagnostic medicine within this decade. Collapse

Abstract: Design Science Research (DSR) projects are diverse along various dimensions (e.g., methodological reference approach, level of contribution, type of evaluation) and they produce a vast amount of information. This poses problems especially for less experienced design researchers who wish to write and publish DSR articles. Since DSR projects hardly fit the established structure of mainstream research articles in Information Systems, it is not entirely clear which aspects of the research project should be communicated and how to compile them. Existing guidance for a specific DSR article structure (Gregor and Hevner, 2013) is generic and has not been adapted yet to different types of DSR research projects. The purpose of the study at hand is to design a guide for design researchers that accommodates the diversity among DSR projects and clarifies what should be reported in which sequence. The concept of design patterns and various descriptive studies were used to design and evaluate the proposed guidance artefact. situation is problematic, as the contributions of DSR to the field of IS should advance the field and provide new opportunities for both design-oriented and behavioral research. However, due to a comparably small share of publications in high-impact outlets, the impact of DSR on IS research is lower than one would expect (vom Brocke et al., 2020;Gregor and Hevner, 2013).Having recognized the communication of DSR projects as a problem, various IS researchers have dedicated time and effort to develop support (e.g., vom Brocke and Maedche, 2019;Peffers et al., 2007;Avdiji and Winter, 2019;Cahenzli, 2022b;Cahenzli et al., 2021;Gregor et al., 2020;Gregor and Jones, 2007). To the best of our knowledge, the only publication focusing on the communication task of writing DSR articles is the MIS Quarterly article by Gregor and Hevner (2013), that proposes a reference structure for all types of DSR articles. This generic communication guidance has, however, not proven effective enough for design researchers, as the underlying problem appears to persist (Tremblay et al., 2018). The authors of the article at hand, design researchers themselves, perceive that the persistence of the "DSR writeup problem" is at least partially due to the diversity among DSR studies. Hence, a general reference structure may be either too restrictive for providing applicable support for the entire range of DSR projects, or too generic to be applicable to specific studies. Thus, this existing solution needs to be revisited.Our research objective is therefore to provide innovative support for design researchers in writing DSR articles. This support should both accommodate project diversity and be appropriate for writing articles for top-tier IS outlets. Aiming at providing a solution for a class of problems (i.e., a purposefully designed artifact), we apply the DSR methodology in our study. To ensure the validity of the proposed solution, the multi-grounded approach to DSR by Goldkuhl (2004) is applied. This means that artifact proposals should be grounded in theory, internally, and empirically. Consequently, several studies were conducted to ensure appropriate grounding of the artifact, including interviews, document analyses, and a survey.The article at hand reports these studies by presenting the background knowledge (including original research that provides the basis for the artifact design's theoretical grounding), the design approach, the proposed artifact, and its evaluation (internal and empirical grounding). 2 Background KnowledgeThis section provides an overview of the problem space (Maedche et al., 2019) and the current solution knowledge. Abstract: Freelisting is a widely used ethnographic data elicitation and analysis technique that can help researchers quickly and systematically collect and quantify qualitative cultural data. The paper discusses the value of freelisting for IS researchers who conduct qualitative and/or quantitative research. Specifically, the paper provides an overview of freelisting; examines how prior research has used freelisting; gives step-by-step instructions about how to collect, analyze, and present freelist data; and describes the benefits of freelisting in the context of IS research. The following items are explained in detail: (1) how to understand when freelisting can be an appropriate choice; (2) the different types of freelists; (3) how to focus freelists on a specific phenomenon; (4) how to analyze freelists; and (5) how to triangulate freelist data. Additionally, the paper details seven ways IS researchers can benefit from using freelisting: (1) creating culturally salient surveys; (2) revisiting or generating new field-specific theories; (3) enhancing a mixed-method research design; (4) uncovering information about cultural similarities and differences in intracultural and cross-cultural research designs; (5) consciously considering the importance of context; (6) developing more robust quantitative analysis techniques; and (7) eliciting culturally relevant data about development or refinement of technology in applied settings. Abstract: In recent years, the topic of algorithmic management has received increasing attention in information systems (IS) research and beyond. As both emerging platform businesses and established companies rely on artificial intelligence and sophisticated software to automate tasks previously done by managers, important organizational, social, and ethical questions emerge. However, a cross-disciplinary approach to algorithmic management that brings together IS perspectives with other (sub-)disciplines such as macro-and micro-organizational behavior, business ethics, and digital sociology is missing, despite its usefulness for IS research. This article engages in cross-disciplinary agenda setting through an in-depth report of a professional development workshop (PDW) entitled "Algorithmic Management: Toward a Cross-Disciplinary Research Agenda" delivered at the 2021 Academy of Management Annual Meeting. Three leading experts (Mareike Möhlmann, Lindsey Cameron, and Laura Lamers) on the topic provide their insights on the current status of algorithmic management research, how their work contributes to this area, where the field is heading in the future, and what important questions should be answered going forward. These accounts are followed up by insights from the breakout group discussions at the PDW that provided further input. Overall, the experts and workshop participants emphasized that future research should examine both the desirable and undesirable outcomes of algorithmic management and should not shy away from posing ethical and normative questions. Abstract: This paper adapts real options theory to explain how executives create and maintain real options portfolios within leadership pipelines. Hypotheses flowing from our theorizing predict that executives often make seemingly risky staffing decisions for leaders who occupy stepping-stone positions. Focusing on their option (future potential) rather than project (current productivity) value, executives laterally transfer leaders in stepping-stone positions frequently, despite it resulting in lower short-term job performance, but often promote these leaders at lower levels of performance and sooner. Once leaders are promoted to destination positions where they may stay indefinitely, executives tend to transfer high-performing leaders more often but not when they are still improving the effectiveness of their current unit. We present evidence suggesting that executives make these decisions to improve other units and maintain a flexible system, possibly recapturing previous investments in developing those leaders. We provide empirical support for our hypotheses using eight years of data in a large retail organization (n = 25,004) where executives overseeing thousands of units made internal mobility decisions. These findings refine real options theory, show that it explains these phenomena better than existing theories, and provide important and immediately usable practical implications for executives. Abstract: Machine learning becomes truly valuable only when decision-makers begin to depend on it to optimize decisions. Instilling trust in machine learning is critical for businesses in their efforts to interpret and get insights into data, and to make their analytical choices accessible and subject to accountability. In the field of aviation, the innovative application of machine learning and analytics can facilitate an understanding of the risk of accidents and other incidents. These occur infrequently, generally in an irregular, unpredictable manner, and cause significant disruptions, and hence, they are classified as "highimpact, low-probability" (HILP) events. Aviation incident reports are inspected by experts, but it is also important to have a comprehensive overview of incidents and their holistic effects. This study provides an interpretable machine-learning framework for predicting aircraft damage. In addition, it describes patterns of flight specifications detected through the use of a simulation tool and illuminates the underlying reasons for specific aviation accidents. As a result, we can predict the aircraft damage with 85% accuracy and 84% in-class accuracy. Most important, we simulate a combination of possible flight-type, aircraft-type, and pilot-expertise combinations to arrive at insights, and we recommend actions that can be taken by aviation stakeholders, such as airport managers, airlines, flight training companies, and aviation policy makers. Abstract: Users of rival technology platforms, such as Android-versus-iOS, often harbor hostile opposition to each other. The dominant perspective of technology resistance, conceptualized as technology inertia, cannot explain such strong oppositional behavior. We propose a threat to tech self-esteem construct that captures distinct threat perceptions and offers a unified explanation for oppositional intentions. We conducted an empirical study of smartphone users, where we find that the threat to technology self-esteem arises from distinct antecedents and offers a singular explanation for opposition. Abstract: Crowdsourcing is acknowledged as a promising avenue for addressing societal challenges by drawing on the wisdom of the crowd to offer diverse solutions to complex problems. Advancing a new conceptual framework of 'divergent innovation' which delineates between topic and quality divergence as focal metrics of performance when crowdsourcing for solutions to societal challenges, this study investigates the impacts of four ideation stimuli on divergent innovation. These four stimuli include task description concreteness, resource richness, topic entropy, and judging criteria comprehensiveness. Empirical analysis based on data sourced from an online crowd-ideation platform reveals that task description concreteness negatively affects topic divergence but positively influences quality divergence, whereas resource richness positively affects topic divergence but negatively influences quality divergence. Additionally, the relationship between topic entropy and topic divergence is U-shaped, with no significant impact on quality divergence. These findings contribute to extant literature on crowdsourcing and offer invaluable insights for practitioners. Collapse
