Abstract: Reliable hotel cancellation prediction can help establish appropriate operational strategies for hotel manage­ ment. In this sector, personal name records (PNR) data may be the most representative information source for prediction tasks. Despite the popularity of PNR, its inherent lack of availability has been commonly disregarded in the literature. Existing studies have directly input PNR into high-dimensional machine learning (ML) models to achieve cancellation predictions. Another type of model generates cancellation prediction based on the proba­ bility modeling of samples. In this study, we propose an interpretable feature interaction method to enrich the existing PNR information. Thereafter, we empirically assess the prediction performance of the two model classes. This study specifically determines whether or not the two methods can cross-fertilize each other to improve cancellation prediction. To do so, we propose a model integrating Bayesian networks (BNs) and Lasso regression for this prediction task. This study utilizes BNs for the probability model consistent with our correlated variables and dichotomous prediction setting. Moreover, we use a linear ML model (i.e., Lasso regression), given its ad­ vantages in reducing ineffective predictors and transparency for ranking feature importance. Empirical results show that the proposed integration model has better prediction performance, and the obtained BN estimators and interactive features are the most important predictors. This study contributes to the booking cancellation liter­ ature by proposing an interpretable feature interaction and a prediction method integrating two types of effective models. The obtained accurate and interpretable cancellation prediction further contributes to offering practical implications to hoteliers in managerial decision-making. Collapse

Abstract: Requesting personal information in frontline service encounters raises privacy concerns among customers. The proximity contact tracing that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic provides an intriguing context of in­ formation requests. Hospitality venues required contact tracing details from customers, and customer coopera­ tion varied with concerns about privacy. Drawing on gossip theory, we investigate the roles of businesses’ data privacy practices and government support in driving customers’ responses to contact tracing. Our findings show that perceived transparency of a business’s privacy practices has a positive effect on customers’ commitment to the business, while perceived control exerts a negative effect on commitment. These effects are mediated by customers’ information falsification rather than disclosure, because the former is a sensitive behavioral indicator of privacy concerns. The results also reveal the moderating roles of government support. This research con­ tributes to the customer data privacy literature by demonstrating the distinct effects of perceived transparency and control on commitment and revealing the underlying mechanism. Moreover, the research extends the conceptual understanding of privacy practices from online contexts to face-to-face contexts of frontline service. Abstract: The first-stage decision is critical in the decision process in crowdfunding, where the cover image plays an important role in forming first impressions and persuading click funders. This study explores how emotional visual cues (human face) and informational visual cues (visual text) in the cover image affect funders’ decisions and how the effects differ across campaigns. The results demonstrate the great persuasive power of human faces and visual text. We further illustrate the effects of joyful expressions and image-text congruency as well as the non-significant influence of the length and polarity of visual text. Moreover, emotional visual cues are more effective in intangible product campaigns, while informational visual cues are more effective in tangible product campaigns, and both are important in social service campaigns. Valuable insight is provided to creators about the design of the cover image. Collapse

Abstract: We describe a pedagogical study in which we designed and implemented a module for undergraduate Management Information Systems (MIS) students, aimed at preparing them for an increasingly AIimpacted business environment and society. We developed a learning module that taps their inherent motivation to make a meaningful difference, challenging them to ideate applications of AI for social good (AI4SG), focused specifically on sustainability. We piloted the module in an existing introductory MIS course, first establishing a range of fundamental AI capabilities through hands-on demos and study cases. Then, with instructor guidance, the student teams, working in a social entrepreneurship "start-up" context, identified sustainability challenges impacting their own communities and worked together to propose and pitch AI-powered solutions. The results suggest that students find this approach deepened their understanding of sustainability issues in their communities, improved their knowledge of how AI could address social issues, and improved their confidence in their ability to innovate. Abstract: Although big data analytics (BDA) does enhance innovation performance, it remains unclear whether BDA contributes more or less than traditional marketing analytics (TMA) to firm innovation. This study tests hy­ potheses based on data collected from multiple sources by using four-wave survey and archival data from 201 firms. The results indicate that BDA has a stronger positive effect on new product development (NPD) perfor­ mance than TMA, over time. However, TMA, when coupled with exploitative innovation strategy, has a stronger positive effect on NPD performance than if coupled with exploratory innovation strategy. Abstract: This study examines how an individual cognitively generates creative ideas using mobile collaboration platforms (MCPs). Applying the cognitive creativity perspective and the knowledge of the idiosyncratic capabilities of MCPs, the study proposes a research model that explains MCP-driven creative idea generation mechanisms. The model is validated using a field study where individuals were involved in a group collaboration setting for a cognitively challenging task. The results indicate that the use of an MCP positively supports an individual’s creative idea generation process through cognitive warming-up processes (spontaneity effect) and behavioral autonomy (freedom effect). Abstract: Though we heard that "Cyberwar is coming!" as long ago as in 1993, scientists and tech experts were divided. Some of them firmly believed that the scenarios of sci-fi movies were soon to come true, others remained sceptical. As of 2023, with the world deeply dependent on various digital technologies, the cyberspace considered by NATO as another battlespace, and over a year after the attack of the Russian Federation on Ukraine, it has become apparent that the world has witnessed the first-ever true hybrid war. In an unprecedented manner, the attacker has combined "traditional", conventional military strategy with digital warfare. This paper discusses a number of the "first-evers" and challenges related to the technology and cyberspace observed before or during the war in Ukraine, the lessons learnt so far, and what it means for software engineers, cybersecurity experts and other IT specialists. Abstract: An extensive literature studies the benefits for a firm to be the first to invest in innovative technologies such as information technologies (ITs). However, IT investment often faces the risk of implementation failure. How would such risk affect an early adopter’s incentive to invest? Do late adopters benefit from information about the early adopter’s investment? In this paper, we investigate these questions in a context in which two firms, a leader and a follower, invest in a cost-reducing IT sequentially. This paper differs from prior literature in two aspects: First, IT adoption is nonexclusive and available to all client firms. Second, IT implementation can fail. In this case, the follower may have information about the leader’s IT investment level or implementation outcome before making an investment decision. We use a Hotelling model of duopoly competition to examine how IT implementation failure risks and the follower’s knowledge about the leader’s IT investment may affect the firms’ incentive to sequentially invest in IT. Our results show that the risk of IT implementation failure impacts the firms’ investment incentives and profits through three distinct effects: the first mover advantage mitigation; competition mitigation; and uncertainty-driven, cost-based differentiation effects, and these three effects may drive the firms’ investment and profits in opposite directions. The follower’s knowledge about the leader’s IT investment level before making an IT investment decision gives the leader a first mover advantage and the follower a disadvantage. In contrast, the follower’s knowledge about the leader’s IT implementation outcome can benefit both the leader and the follower. Finally, we find that a spaced-out sequential IT investment schedule, in which the follower makes the investment decision after the leader’s IT investment level and implementation outcome are both known, leads to the highest industry-wide IT investment and social surplus. Abstract: Despite the large number of systematic literature reviews (SLRs) on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for service delivery, scholars suggest more scientific evidence. However, the direction that these reviews will take depends on the knowledge accumulated in the existing literature. Therefore, the objective of this research is to explore SLRs that have synthesized the use of AI for service delivery. We conducted a tertiary study, which consists of a bibliometric analysis of SLRs. We searched SLRs published over the last ten years in six bibliographic databases. Sixty-six studies meeting the inclusion criteria were processed through a bibliometric analysis in which we combined article metadata with data extracted from the full-text review. The results describe the publication trends of SLRs, their application domains, and the particularities of the private and public sectors. Recommendations for future SLRs on the use of AI for service delivery are proposed. Collapse
