Abstract: This editorial has two purposes. First, we address why a focus on doing impactful research that creates public value is vital for the present and the future of the information systems (IS) field. Second, we outline practices we have used to build research programs that promote the study of strategic IS opportunities and challenges to create public value.The published focus of the Journal of Strategic Information Systems is "… on the strategic management, business and organizational issues associated with the introduction and utilization of information systems….and the incorporation of IT into organizations' strategic thinking, strategy alignment [and] organizational arrangements…". As such, the journal is not interested in information systems in isolation, but rather in the larger impact of information systems on the organization, and concomitantly, on society more broadly. Guy Gable, former Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for JSIS quotes an unnamed scholar who said, "I personally find it unethical, if research is not driven by some type of relationship to 'contribution of 'societal value'. This is something we have forgotten and neglected in our frantic race for publishing more and getting a higher h-index … Without contribution to attainment of societal values, the IS field does not have any meaning, and should be eradicated" (Gable, 2020). Abstract: We contribute to the emerging literature on quality certification by digital platforms by studying the launch of the Airbnb Plus service, wherein the platform inspects properties and provides a badge that presumably signals the quality of the property and the reliability of the host. Our identification strategy relies on the fact that the Airbnb Plus service was launched in different cities at different times, and listings within the cities received the certification at different times. Using a staggered difference-in-differences estimation strategy in conjunction with suitable matching methods, we found that the Airbnb Plus certification increased the weekly booking rate of Plus listings by about 6.8% on average (direct effect). We also found some evidence that non-Plus listings saw a temporary decline in booking rate when one or more nearby properties received a Plus certification (externality effect). The net impact of the Airbnb Plus service on the platform itself was an annual increase in revenue of about $37,500 for the average 2-kilometer zone in a U.S. city that included one or more Plus listings, as compared to matched zones without any Plus listings (local platform effect). We performed additional analyses, including a randomized experiment, to demonstrate the robustness of our findings. Overall, our results suggest that platform-endorsed quality certification has significant economic impacts-not just on the listings that receive the certification but on other listings on the platform as well as on the platform itself. Abstract: The debate on the pros and cons of employee attachment to social networking sites (SNS) has led to social media policy paralysis in many organizations, and often a prohibition on employee use of SNS. This paper examines corporate users’ attachment to SNS. An analysis of 316 survey responses showed that corporate users’ socialization in large public SNS was steeped in perceived work-related benefits, which in turn nourished their SNS attachment. Social use outperformed informational use in generating perceived work-related benefits from SNS. Weak ties in large heterogeneous networks resulted in strategic and operational benefits, whereas the effects of strong bonding in homogenous networks were limited to operational benefits. The paper contributes to research on SNS use by corporate users and the debate on the effect of SNS use for work. The findings will benefit SNS strategists of organizations and policymakers to exploit the benefit potential of public SNS. Collapse

Abstract: The development of the Fintech Ecosystem brings radical socio-economic value by increasing entrepreneurship, innovation, and financial inclusion. Yet, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how value is co-created among the actors in the Fintech Ecosystem. The research objective is to conduct an in-depth case study in the Australian Fintech Ecosystem to explore the processes and mechanisms of value co-creation. Our study develops a framework for understanding value co-creation facilitated through digital affordance infrastructure. The study has several potential theoretical contributions to the literature on Fintech Ecosystem development by providing insights into antecedent conditions, mechanisms, paradoxical tensions, and outcome attributes derived from the framework. For practitioners, our framework could assist regulators and organizations within the ecosystem in gaining a deeper understanding of the processes necessary for continued success. Regulators could adjust the intensity of controls in response to environmental uncertainties and tensions. Collapse

Abstract: This paper discusses the challenges associated with managing the online privacy of young adults and how a policy can be developed. The paper argues that online privacy for GenZ is important to protect. It also argues that protection can be ensured if we understand and know what privacy-related values behold GenZ and hence define their objectives accordingly. Information privacy is defined as a process by which one can have freedom from unauthorized intrusion hence resulting in seclusion. In a final synthesis, 22 main objectives are identified -6 fundamental objectives and 16 means objectives. Collectively the objectives help in developing online privacy policies for young adults. Abstract: Microtask gig workers (MGWs) rely on digital platforms to arrange work agreements with requesters to complete well-defined microtasks. Many MGWs use an electronic network of practice (ENP) to facilitate information sharing about desirable and undesirable microtasks. This study uses social capital theory to theorize how social capital’s dimensions – structural, cognitive, and relational – shape the development of uncertainty-reducing and individualized-skill benefits. Based on survey data from 436 Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) workers, the findings demonstrate that unique social capital dimensions affect specific ENP benefits. Understanding the communication style of an ENP (i.e., cognitive social capital) positively influences the uncertainty-reducing benefits of microtask information quality (MIQ) related to MTurk work. Combined with expectations of reci­ procity and trust in ENP members (i.e., relational social capital), MIQ shapes microtask opportunity recognition (MOR), whereby individual MGWs identify opportunities to complete financially beneficial microtasks. The present study demonstrates that contextual factors, based on the coopetive nature of microtask ENPs, affect the interrelated structure of social capital theory and its underlying dimensions. Lastly, post hoc findings demon­ strate the influence of MOR on MGWs’ financial performance, challenging previously held assumptions about the role of MIQ within the microtask literature. Collapse

Abstract: As established routines and other forms of knowledge may prevent organizations to respond to changing situations, they need to learn how to break out of the old way of thinking and acting. While unlearning is among the most promising approaches to do so, there is only a limited understanding of the requirements for the effective design of unlearning support systems (USS). As part of a larger design research project, this research-in-progress paper reviews 41 articles on practical approaches for unlearning support and derives an initial catalog of 23 design requirements. Abstract: Organizations are increasingly concerned with the continuous reassessment and redesign of their products, processes, and business models to remain competitive in uncertain environments. Thereby, mental models, routines, and behaviors of individuals and entire organizations need to be updated to fit changing demands and environmental factors. 'Unlearning' is a promising approach to achieve this because it allows knowledge to be refined and adapted to novel situations. Unlearning established ways of thinking and doing effectively poses, however, several challenges that could be mitigated by an appropriate tool support. By following a qualitative systematic review of literature from Information Systems and adjacent disciplines, we identified and synthesized existing tools and guidance to assist individuals, teams, and organizations in unlearning. With our study, we contribute to an integrated overview of practical support for unlearning based on a sample of 41 papers as well as useful guidance for practitioners, designers, and researchers. Abstract: Prior work has maintained that organizations benefit from managing the transfer of proprietary knowledge. Transfer is often advantageous within organizational boundaries but may be harmful across them, because it might erode competitive advantage. Hence, we ask: How can organizations affect the direction in which knowledge flows? We examine the role of organizational climate as a governing mechanism for knowledge transfer. Our empirical strategy consists of a mixed-methods approach leveraging qualitative and experimental data over two cycles of theory building and theory testing. We start with an extensive field study of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), leveraging the insights from desk research, field observations, 53 interviews, and a laboratory-in-the-field experiment involving 518 physicists. We then provide a causal test of the emerging framework by means of two laboratory experiments with 389 participants. Our findings suggest employees are more likely to transfer knowledge to their colleagues when they identify as an integral part of the organization, but they would rather transfer knowledge to outside competitors when their organization encourages them to outperform coworkers. Abstract: This study examines the literary corpus on the role and potential of blockchain technology in promoting gender equality through the lens of new technology-oriented corporate governance models. It investigates if and how corporate governance models can include blockchain technology to add value to gender equality and inclusion processes, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5. A bibliometric analysis of a database—containing 127 articles, 4 United Nations reports, 3 European institutions’ reports, 1 International Labour Office report, 1 World Economic Forum report, and 4 industry reports useful to our analysis—was conducted from 1990 to 2021, to provide a map of the knowledge generated and circulated by the literature. This study offers insights into publication activities, essential topics, citation trends, and the status of collaborations between contributors to previous research and aggregated contributions to the area of blockchain technology studies. Furthermore, the study offers a retrospective analysis of the content published in the blockchain technology field. The findings indicate that field research has focussed primarily on blockchain’s economic and financial attributes but not on social potential. This study emphasises the implementation of blockchain technology to manage gender equality and inclusion processes by orienting corporate governance models towards social and sustainable values.
