Abstract: Information systems (IS) strategizing is particularly challenging for established organizations because of their historical conditions. The question of how established organizations can effec­ tively manage their historical conditions in IS strategizing remains under-explored. To address this question, we conducted a case study tracing the history (1960–2020) of an established or­ ganization in the building and construction industry. Through the analysis, we found four sys­ tems: accounting management system, business communication system, knowledge management system, and community collaboration system, as the historical conditions that formed an IS imprint, which was later managed and reproduced during IS strategizing. Using the imprinting lens, we developed an understanding of: (1) the formation of the IS imprint at the organizational foundation; and (2) the reproduction of the IS imprint, considering imprint-as-resource and imprint-as-constraint during IS strategizing. We contribute to the literature by providing an un­ derstanding of how historical conditions inform IS strategizing in the long term and by applying the imprinting lens to uncover the process through which an IS imprint is strategically managed and reproduced beyond the founding phase. The insights developed from this study are trans­ ferable to similar organizational contexts for managing historical conditions in IS strategizing. Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates the design considerations for health information technologies (HITs) that are aimed at supporting lower socioeconomic status (SES) individuals in addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) needs. While emerging technologies offer new opportunities for improving quality of life outcomes, many lower SES individuals may be novice users of digital health technologies, including SDOH technologies. To address this gap, we conducted qualitative research using user-centered design tools during the development of an app designed to help individuals address SDOH needs. Our findings provide insight into the unique characteristics, needs, and preferences of lower SES digital novices, and highlight multiple aspects of their eHealth literacy. We discuss the implications of these findings for designing and implementing HITs for novice users. Collapse

Abstract: The goals of design science research (DSR) projects are to generate novel and useful artifacts and to produce rigorous and generalizable design knowledge. Often, DSR projects are conducted in collaborative, interdisciplinary project teams. Different disciplinary approaches to codifying design knowledge result in challenging project interactions. To study this situation, we analyze design knowledge codification in interdisciplinary teams over time. We gain insights from a survey of recent DSR papers that have been published in the AIS Senior Scholars’ Basket. We then present a detailed case study of a longitudinal project that brought to light issues of sharing design knowledge across disciplinary borders. Drawing from the survey and case study, we provide actionable guidance on how to effectively codify and share design knowledge to support researchers and practitioners to build useful artifacts and to make interdisciplinary design knowledge contributions reusable and applicable. Abstract: CBDC has become a discussion topic with worldwide economic and societal relevance. Payment system efficiency is a top driver for digital currency adoption. We examine literature gaps for payment ecosystem impact on CBDC adoption and design, and conduct test for 65 World Bank countries. We measure payment alternatives and preferences impacts and estimate least squares and limited dependent variables regressions. CBDC adoption is driven by payment ecosystem, alternative characteristics, e-money usage, perceived safety, and infrastructure. This signals that user familiarity with digital payment methods, trust in authorities, and structural capabilities support CBDC adoption. Adoption is inversely related to alternatives that dampen the need for CBDC. Transaction volume and trust in authorities are linked to choosing a central database, not a digital ledger technology (DLT) infrastructure. Deviations occur from ambiguous effects of cash and DLT usage on CBDC adoption and industry concentration, architecture, and linkages. Collapse

Abstract: Over 600,000 people go missing every year in the US alone. Despite the extensive resources allocated to investigating these cases, the high volume of missing person cases constitutes one of the biggest challenges for law enforcement agencies. One approach to tackle this challenge is using crowdsourcing. That is, volunteers use freely available tools and techniques to aid the existing efforts to investigate missing person cases. Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) refers to gathering information from publicly available sources and analyzing it through a comprehensive set of open-source tools to produce meaningful and actionable intelligence. OSINT has been applied to address various societal challenges and crimes, including environmental abuse, human rights violations, child exploitation, domestic violence, disasters, and locating missing people. Building on this premise, this case examines a crowdsourced initiative called Trace Labs that aims to assist law enforcement agencies in solving missing person cases using OSINT tools. The case emphasizes socio-technical aspects of cybersecurity, highlighting both the bright and dark sides of technology. It demonstrates the potential of information systems to serve the public good by examining topics such as open-source software, crowdsourcing, and intelligence gathering, while acknowledging that the very same underlying technology can be used for malicious purposes. concerns the behavioral aspects of information security and human-computer interaction (HCI). Abstract: This paper examines community-created online 'howto' videos that offer advice for video game streamers and content creators. The goal of this study was to investigate how successful streamers encourage newcomers and/or smaller streamers to "grow" on Twitch, examining such factors as the advice they offer, the evidence that such advice works, and their reasons for sharing such information. More critically, how does the creation of such videos further entrench those creators as successful and thus, able to deploy "streaming capital" to buttress their claims? While the initial focus was on Twitch, this research led to a wider-ranging exploration-following the advice of successful streamers was to employ other platforms in combination, as the field of live streaming has extended far beyond Twitch itself. Abstract: The fish farming industry is one of the fastest-growing industries and will be one of the most important businesses in the future. However, more salmon than ever died prematurely in Norway in 2021, mainly due to disease and lice treatments. To improve this situation, sharing data related to lice is crucial. However, to facilitate data sharing, a platform for storing data, data comparability, and trustworthy relationships must be secured. Sharing data poses challenges that require proper governance. Based on a longitudinal, qualitative case study of a collaborative platform ecosystem in the Norwegian aquaculture industry, we identify governance mechanisms that enable data sharing and develop a model for the gradual maturation of data sharing. Our insights from a collaborative platform ecosystem within a traditional industry complement the extant research, mainly focused on centralized platform ecosystems. We also provide guidance for practitioners who want to enable data sharing in their ecosystems. Collapse

Abstract: Calls have been made for information systems to go beyond supporting the instrumental outcomes traditionally associated with business imperatives to foster more humanistic outcomes. This study explores the mechanisms used by two intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) to promote humanistic goals such as pro-social behaviour. We identify four key mechanisms through which the IPAs support humanistic goals and draw on humanistic management literature to identify the humanistic goals supported. The mechanisms are (1) humanistic framing of analytics and goals, (2) persuasion, (3) automation of humanistic actions, and (4) anchoring humanistic goals to instrumental outcomes. The study raises issues about the moral implications of instrumentalising humanistic outcomes and suggests a need for theory to understand the role of Human-AI interaction in promoting humanistic outcomes. We propose a need for investigations into how and whether human-AI interactions can foster authentic humanistic outcomes in practice. Collapse

Abstract: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its impact on performance have generated a debate that has evolved across several perspectives (shareholder, stakeholder, resource-based, and contingency). Building on the resource-based and contingency perspectives, we shed new light on this debate by analyzing the impact of CSR on performance in emerging market firms, advancing the idea that CSR is a mechanism that helps address market and government failures. We first argue that CSR’s three constituent dimensions (environmental, social, and governance) vary in their impact on performance because each dimension has a different mitigating effect on contextual failures that hobble emerging market firms. Specifically, we contend that social CSR has a larger effect on performance than either governance CSR or environmental CSR for emerging market firms, because the former helps build capabilities that more directly reduce the negative consequences of government failures in the provision of public goods and services that firms need to operate efficiently. We then provide additional depth to this idea by arguing that other mechanisms used for mitigating market failures in an emerging market context, namely firm-level business group affiliation and country-level government policy nudges, strengthen this differential influence of each of the three dimensions of CSR on performance. Analyses of a sample of 89 publicly traded Indian firms from 2007 to 2017 support these arguments. Funding: A.
