Abstract: Digital platforms are supraorganizational entities that use digital technology to facilitate interactions between diverse actors, leading to novel forms of organisation and accompanying forms of control. The current Information Systems (IS) literature, however, struggles to describe control on digital platforms in a way that does justice to the dynamic character of the phenomenon. Taking this as an opportunity, we follow the enactment of control over time and across parties in a hybrid ethnographic study of the social commerce platform Poshmark. Specifically, we conceptualise the dynamics of control as changes in the means of control—formal or informal—and the sources of control—operator or participants—over time. Tracking these conceptual dimensions, we identify the distinct ways control has changed on Poshmark. Synthesising these findings into four dynamics of control, we show that control on digital platforms is rarely static due to aggregate effects arising from the operator and from participant interactions with each other through the digital features deployed on the platform. Based on these insights, our study contributes to the IS literature on control by broadening the conception of control on digital platforms. The theoretical and practical insights generated in this paper thereby lay the foundation for the systematic study of the dynamics of control that are unique to platform environments. Collapse

Abstract: The manipulation of online consumer reviews (OCRs) became a global phenomenon. Although policymakers require platforms to delete OCRs that are identified as fake, they also urge to consider the principle of freedom of expression before deleting content. Since fake OCR detection algorithms are imperfect, platforms must either balance preventive deletion with preserving freedom of expression, or they can simply tag OCRs that are potentially fake. In this paper, we examine the consequences of the latter. With an incentive-compatible experiment, we observe that tagging fake OCRs harms relevant consumer trust dimensions. Contrary to our expectations, tags do not serve as trust-increasing signals for the platform as a signal provider. They do, however, not only directly harm consumers' trust in OCRs and reviewers, but also indirectly via the activation of consumers' persuasion knowledge. Although consumer trust decreases, we find no negative economic consequences for the platform from tagging potential fake OCRs. Collapse

Abstract: E-commerce has grown rapidly over the past years, with prevailing e-commerce platforms aggregating large amounts of customer data. This practice has several undesirable side effects, such as facilitating profiling that may lead to price discrimination and data feedback loops that can hamper competition. Moreover, data hoarding carries security risks through data breaches and undermines customers’ privacy expectations. On the other hand, convenience aspects and compliance regulation demand the processing and storage of user-related data. To address this tension field, we aim to conceptualize and iteratively refine a data-minimizinig e-commerce platform. Following a design science research approach, we identify design objectives and propose and implement a solution in which stakeholders receive only customer data that is indispensable for their part of the process. Our solution leverages digital identity wallets and general-purpose zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs). We aim to perform a criteria-based evaluation to assess our artifact’s feasibility and fitness from an interdisciplinary perspective. With our results, we hope to illustrate that combining state-of-the-art cryptographic techniques and an emerging digital identity paradigm allows reaching the user experience of incumbent e-commerce platforms while mitigating the undesirable socio-economic side effects of avoidable data disclosure. Abstract: In the 21st century, Agetech (age technology) and tech devices can be integral to healthcare systems in increasing patient engagement, maintaining independence, and helping seniors live happier and healthier lives. Studying how seniors use and interact with technology can help researchers, technology designers, and vendors understand the possible benefits and risks of using technology products designed to meet older adults' needs. This study attempts to use a qualitative approach to examine the elderly opinions about using intuition robotics (i.e., companion robots). The findings indicate a positive attitude toward using this Agetech due to health and wellness, companionship and support, and technology design benefits. However, participants also raise concerns about digital dependency and social disconnection concerns, information integrity and online resilience risks, and implementation costs. Through a model, we suggest a need for more education and awareness about robotics's potential gains and concerns. Collapse

Abstract: The security of every organization is critical and should be proactively planned. The research field of security, workplace behavior, security safeguards, workarounds, and cybersecurity explores how organizations can effectively strategize and use adaptive security plans to minimize the security vulnerability of organizations. These solutions rely heavily on the technology adopted by organizations that seek to align with policies that safeguard their information assets consciously. However, despite several works in the literature on workarounds, the concept of workarounds that poses a security risk in an organization is still riddled with ambiguities. This review covers current research involving 28 articles across the Association for information systems (AIS) basket of eight conferences and other IS securityrelated journals. Our results identify four major categories that reveal the intersection of workarounds and security in the workplace from recent literature. We further discuss their implications and propose avenues for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Partial least squares (PLS) path modeling is a widely used method in the information systems (IS) discipline for estimating linear structural equation models. At the same time, researchers have debated its relative merits compared to simple summed scores or to covariance-based estimation of structural equation models. In this paper, we comment on recent developments in PLS to ensure that IS researchers have up-to-date methodological knowledge and best practices if they decide to use PLS. In particular, we briefly review its mechanisms, its well-known properties, and its usage history in IS research. We briefly revisit a high-impact critique and debate a few years ago to identify the critical arguments around current PLS practices and use. That critique proved to be the driver for many advances in the PLS method and its applications which we discuss extensively and use to make 14 recommendations for how and when to use PLS or alternatives.Simply put, most IS researchers do not study research questions where predictive modeling would be applicable but focus on testing theory that requires explanatory models. If predictive modeling pertains to their study, researchers should clearly explain the predictions' purpose and usefulness and use operative prediction (i.e., mixed formative-reflective) to assess their models' out-of-sample prediction at the individual level as Shmueli et al. (2016) and Evermann and Tate (2016) recommend. Abstract: When we were first invited to write an essay on the use of PLS for CAIS, we wanted to focus on recent developments to help applied IS researchers, and the CAIS community of authors, reviewers, and editors make use of the latest research on and methodological advances in PLS. Recognizing that Information Systems is arguably the discipline in which the use of PLS as an alternative to CB-SEM originated and is most widely used, we realized that, pragmatically, our essay must focus on how to use PLS, not whether to use PLS.We received six interesting responses from researchers active in the PLS community. Their thoughts on our presentation of recent developments in PLS show very different perspectives with many points of difference amongst points of agreement in all the responses. In this rejoinder, we briefly respond to the received comments, clarify our position and ideas, and identify points of agreement (and disagreement). We emphasize that none of the responses give us cause to revise or eliminate our recommendations in recent developments.Overall, we believe this discussion on PLS to be valuable in advancing the use of PLS in Information Systems, which is, as we show in this rejoinder, an urgent issue. Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) offers great potential in organizations. The path to achieving this potential will involve human-AI interworking, as has been confirmed by numerous studies. However, it remains to be explored which direction this interworking of human agents and AI-enabled systems ought to take. To date, research still lacks a holistic understanding of the entangled interworking that characterizes human-AI hybrids, so-called because they form when human agents and AI-enabled systems closely collaborate. To enhance such understanding, this paper presents a taxonomy of human-AI hybrids, developed by reviewing the current literature as well as a sample of 101 human-AI hybrids. Leveraging weak sociomateriality as justificatory knowledge, this study provides a deeper understanding of the entanglement between human agents and AI-enabled systems. Furthermore, a cluster analysis is performed to derive archetypes of human-AI hybrids, identifying ideal–typical occurrences of human-AI hybrids in practice. While the taxonomy creates a solid foundation for the understanding and analysis of human-AI hybrids, the archetypes illustrate the range of roles that AI-enabled systems can play in those interworking scenarios. Abstract: This paper provides a literature analysis of digital dark nudging instances. Specifically, the literature analysis identified 14 relevant publications from various research disciplines. As a result, we systematically categorized the publications into seven instances of digital dark nudging (e.g., false expectations) within five application domains (e.g., e-commerce). Moreover, our results suggest that digital dark nudging leads the various adverse effects for individuals, such as monetary losses. We contribute to existing research by providing an overview of digital dark nudging research. Our findings indicate the need to investigate the long-term consequences of digital dark nudging. Furthermore, we pinpoint the need for clear differentiators between regular digital nudging and digital dark nudging, which is desperately needed to ensure to positive nature of digital nudging.
