Abstract: Motivated by prior inconclusive findings on the effectiveness of open innovation initiatives in generating busi­ ness value and the complexity of open innovation, this study draws on the IT-enabled organizational capabilities perspective to propose that the mobilization of information technology (IT) resources can positively affect the development of open innovation initiatives and, in turn, improve firms' open innovation performance. Our empirical analysis of >1100 large Spanish firms confirms that firms' IT resource investments positively impact the development and execution of open innovation initiatives, which in turn improves firms' open innovation performance in terms of product and process innovations. This research contributes to the business value of IT and to Information Systems (IS) research on open innovation by evidencing the enabling role of IT investment in achieving open innovation performance gains. Abstract: This study analyses how the effect of a social norm nudge changes when its function and purpose become transparent. For this purpose, a quantitative, experimental online survey was conducted among 474 participants in the context of voluntary CO2 offset. The non-transparent social norm nudge and the one with information solely on its function showed no significant effect on behaviour. However, the social norm nudge disclosing both, its function and purpose, did effect behaviour positively. Based on the results, it is recommended that social norm nudges are made transparent in practice. The recipient of a social norm nudge should therefore be explicitly notified about its function and purpose. Collapse

Abstract: The real-time data transfer between collaborating companies allows them to represent and control activities across firm boundaries, providing new ways to organize collaborative efforts. We conducted an inductive multiple case study of five long-term relationships to examine the effects of data-intensive technologies on the organization and management of collaborative relationships in industrial companies. Our analysis shows how the delegation of digital activities into specialized digital units fostered data-driven mindsets and data-driven interactions that jointly formed a holistic data-induced rationality for managing the relationship. Together, the compartmentalization of digital collaboration and the data-induced rationalities turned these units into “unitary spaces,” organizational enclosures where structural tensions and competing demands were temporarily suspended to foster single-minded pursuit of collaborative short-term benefits for the partner company. Abstract: Medical image annotation aims to automatically describe the content of medical images. It helps doctors to understand the content of medical images and make better informed decisions like diagnoses. Existing methods mainly follow the approach for natural images and fail to emphasize the object abnormalities, which is the essence of medical images annotation. In light of this, we propose to transform the medical image annotation to a multi-label classification problem, where object abnormalities are focused directly. However, extant multi-label classification studies rely on arduous feature engineering, or do not solve label correlation issues well in medical images. To solve these problems, we propose a novel deep learning model where a frequent pattern mining component and an adversarial-based denoising autoencoder component are introduced. Extensive experiments are conducted on a real retinal image dataset to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. Results indicate that the proposed model significantly outperforms image captioning baselines and multi-label classification baselines. Collapse

Abstract: What might be the root cause of the breaches in healthcare industry? Is it human negligence or technical? If it is human or insider, then what types of insider threats are there? How can these threats be detected? These are the questions this emergent research is going to address. A literature search returned very few empirical research in this area. This research analyzes the textual data as reported by the entities and examines the root causes of the data breaches. Specifically, we found nearly 40% of breaches were due to insiders. We are interested in characteristics of these insider threats since the breaches are based inside the technical perimeter of the hospital. While most research is based on numerical data, this research analyzes the textual data of breach reports. Preliminary results indicate there are different types of insider threats and awareness training has poor effectiveness. Collapse

Abstract: Cyberbullying on social networking sites (SNSs) escalates when bystanders join in the bullying. Although researchers have recognized the harmful consequences of joining in cyberbullying behaviors, little is known about the role of information technology (IT) and its underlying mechanisms in fueling such negative group behavior on SNSs. To address this research gap, we develop and test an integrative model that explains bystanders’ joining-in cyberbullying behaviors on SNSs. Based on the theoretical premises of the social identity model of deindividuation effects (the SIDE model), we derive two deindividuation experiences enabled by SNSs, namely experienced anonymity and experienced social identity. We further use the social network research framework to gain insights into how IT features (i.e., digital profile, search and privacy, relational ties, and network transparency) enable these two deindividuation experiences. Considering the socially undesirable nature of joining-in behaviors, we integrate the SIDE model with moral disengagement theory to explain how deindividuation experiences allow bystanders to bypass their psychological discomfort when engaging in such behaviors through the practice of moral disengagement mechanisms. Our research model is tested using a scenario survey, with two samples recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk and Facebook. Our results support the influences of IT-enabled deindividuation experiences on bystanders joining in cyberbullying and demonstrate the mediating effects of moral disengagement mechanisms in bridging the effects of deindividuation experiences on joining-in behaviors. For researchers, the integrative view offers a conceptual bridge connecting IT features, deindividuation, moral disengagement, and negative online group behaviors on SNSs. For practitioners, our findings provide platform owners and governmental agencies with directions on how to mitigate cyberbullying on SNSs and other forms of deviant and undesirable online group behaviors.History: Yulin Fang, Senior Editor; J.J. Abstract: EditorialWelcome to the fourth issue of volume 32 of the Journal of Strategic Information Systems I am very pleased to introduce this 4th Journal of Strategic Information Systems issue of 2023. In their thought-provoking editorial, "Doing strategic information systems research for public value," Kevin C. Desouza and Gregory S. Dawson highlight the importance of impactful information systems (IS) research that creates public value. They show practically how to build related IS research programs. This editorial is followed by four research articles. The first two address doing strategic information systems research and doing research that has social value. The final two address organizational inertia, decision-making and agility.The 1st research article, "Managing historical conditions in information systems strategizing: An imprinting perspective," is authored by Malshika Dias, Shan L. Pan, Yenni Tim, and Lesley Land. The authors write: IS strategizing is particularly challenging for established organizations because of their historical conditions. The question of how established organizations can effectively manage their historical conditions in IS strategizing remains under-explored. To address this question, we conducted a case study tracing the history of an established organization in the building and construction industry. Through the analysis, we found four systems: an accounting management system, business communication system, knowledge management system, and community collaboration system, as the historical conditions that formed an IS imprint, which was later managed and reproduced during IS strategizing. Using the imprinting lens, we developed an understanding of: (1) the formation of the IS imprint at the organizational foundation; and (2) the reproduction of the IS imprint, considering imprint-as-resource and imprint-as-constraint during IS strategizing. We contribute to the literature by providing an understanding of how historical conditions inform IS strategizing in the long term and by applying the imprinting lens to uncover the process through which an IS imprint is strategically managed and reproduced beyond the founding phase. The insights developed from this study are transferable to similar organizational contexts for managing historical conditions in IS strategizing.The 2nd research article focuses on social value. "Doing good by going digital -Taxonomy of digital social innovation in the context of incumbents," is authored by Christoph Buck, Anna Krombacher, Maximilian Röglinger, and Katrin Wyrtki. They write: Digital social innovation (DSI) offers incumbents a strategic field of action to leverage the opportunities of digital technologies to address pressing societal challenges. By proposing a taxonomy and 12 clusters of incumbents' DSI initiatives based on a sample of 296 real-world objects, we develop a unified understanding of DSI and its characteristics. This lays the foundation for further theorising on DSI from an incumbent perspective and for researchers to shape the DSI field. The taxonomy provides incumbents with an orientation to realise DSI's rich strategic potentials throughout the DSI ideation process and in assessing DSI types.The 3rd research article, "How software as a service simultaneously affords organizational agility and inertia," continues the theme of innovation, highlighting how agility can be facilitated or hindered. The authors, Sabine Khalil and Till J. Winkler, state: Although cloud computing is associated with organizational agility, anecdotal evidence points to resistance to cloud computing by employees in information technology (IT) units. We explored the links between software as a service (SaaS) and organizational agility by conducting two stages of interviews with key informants in large organizations, and by employing affordance and inertia-theoretical lenses. Two basic affordances emerged from the retroductive data analysisimplementing quickly and sourcing independentlywhich in turn yielded two higher-level affordances: trialing alternatives and self-organizing business teams. We developed a model that explains how and why these four affordances enhance agility by accelerating the sensing-to-acting process of organizations. We also describe how five categories of organizational inertia in IT units hinder agility. Our main contribution is how adopting SaaS applications enables organizational agility while highlighting the role of IT unit inertia in SaaS affordance actualization processes.2 technical and social issues related to machine learning. The article is entitled, "Machine learning advice in managerial decision-making: The overlooked role of decision makers' advice utilization." The authors write: Machine learning (ML) analyses offer great potential to craft profound advice for augmenting managerial decision-making. Yet, even the most promising ML advice cannot improve decision-making if it is not utilized by decision makers. We therefore investigate how ML analyses influence decision makers' utilization of advice and resulting decision-making performance. By analyzing data from 239 ML-supported decisions in real-world organizational scenarios, we demonstrate that decision makers' utilization of ML advice depends on the information quality and transparency of ML advice as well as decision makers' trust in data scientists' competence. Furthermore, we find that decision makers' utilization of ML advice can lead to improved decision-making performance, which is, however, moderated by the decision makers' management level. The study's results can help organizations leverage ML advice to improve decision-making and promote the mutual consideration of technical and social aspects behind ML advice in research and practice as a basic requirement.This fourth JSIS issue of 2023 focuses on strategic IS and IS strategizing, along with IT-enabled public value, societal value, innovation, agility, and inertia. It contains a series of thoughtprovoking articles.The 1st research article, "The influence of project initiators' person-to-person followership on project popularity in open source communities: The role of reach and importance," is by Qin Weng (University of Arkansas, Fayetteville) and Franck Soh (University of North Carolina at Greensboro). The authors write: Person-to-person (P2P) followership is an important aspect of major open source software (OSS) development platforms. In this age of social media platforms, P2P followership has significantly shaped the way users engage in OSS development by facilitating the establishment of connections among OSS users. Despite the prevalence of P2P followership, less is known about the impact of OSS project initiators' P2P followership nodes on their project popularity. This is a particularly important gap considering the low rate of OSS project success. We posit that OSS project initiators derive information and influence benefits from the quantity and connectivity of their P2P followership nodes … To test the hypotheses, we use a large panel dataset collected over 24 months from GitHub. The findings indicate that the quantity of OSS project initiators' P2P followership nodes including followers and followees has a positive effect on their project popularity. Moreover, such an effect is mostly dependent on the connectivity of the OSS project initiators' P2P followership nodes in such a way that highly connected P2P followership nodes do not impact influence benefits but they increase information benefits. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications.The 2nd research article, "Business-IT alignment as a coevolution process: An empirical study," is by Fabrizio Amarilli (Politecnico di Milano), Bart van den Hooff (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), and Mario van Vliet (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). The authors write:We provide detailed insight into the complex coevolution dynamics that shape the alignment process by analyzing how different mechanisms and factors are mutually related in complex networks of feedback loops. We combine insights from the literature on alignment as a (coevolution) process with literature on alignment as a state to identify the different components of the organization's socio-technical system that influence alignment, the relationships between these components, and the role that different factors play. In our empirical analysis (based on multiple case studies) we focus on the actual interplay between relevant factors. Using a causal loop diagramming approachbased on system dynamicswe analyze how these factors mutually influence each other through various feedback loops and thus shape the alignment process. We extend previous literature on the alignment process.The 3rd research article, "Can ICT enhance workplace inclusion? ICT-enabled workplace inclusion practices and a new agenda for inclusion research in information systems," is by Monideepa Tarafdar (University of Massachusetts Amherst), Irina Rets (The Open University) and Yang Hu (Lancaster University). The authors write: Workplace inclusion (WI) is a strategic concern for organizations, yet is challenging to achieve. We investigate how ICT use can enhance WI. Based on qualitative data from a leading UK recruitment organization, we conceptualize five ICT-enabled practices -Expanding, Orienting, Enculturating, Leading, and Reflecting. Each practice entails the use of ICT to enhance WI through a distinct set of organizational activities. We highlight the Reflecting practice as key in enhancing other practices, thus developing a framework for ICT-enabled WI that constitutes inter-related ICT-enabled practices. We contribute to the literature on the strategic role of ICT for organizational and social good, an area of priority and focus for the IS discipline.The 4th and final article is a viewpoint article. "Responsibly strategizing with the metaverse: Business implications and DEI opportunities and challenges," is authored by Marco Marabelli (Bentley University) and Sue Newell (University of Warwick). Abstract: We present a critical ethnographic study of data labelling conducted in a Bangalore-based AI start-up. Labelled datasets are primarily produced by human data workers. We explore how humans and machines are configured together in data labelling and what are the demands placed on human workers, including on their body and cognition, while being assigned in the service of machine intelligence. We also show how these human-machine configurations sustain and reproduce the seamless functioning of apparently "autonomous" AI as a normative vision. Though labelled datasets are an indispensable prerequisite to creating ML/AI-based systems, the human labour that produces these datasets cannot be acknowledged fully if the techno-entrepreneurial vision of "self-learning" machine intelligence is to be celebrated and sustained. In pursuit of a normative position of what AI should be, we are left with a denial of how AI is actually produced now. Collapse
