Abstract: Nowadays, digital environments are critical regarding the way enterprise operations are conducted and how enterprises are being developed. Traditional information systems used by enterprises need to evolve to accommodate the shift of their role from representation to mediation, role that has been recently conceptualized but not sufficiently researched to identify means that enable its operationalization across domains and purposes. This work identifies what are the key enablers and how should these be applied regardless of the domain of interest. For this, our paper showcases as a proof-of-concept artifact that operationalizes the before mentioned new role of the IS. Our proposal relies on Conceptual Modelling together with all the other related enablers like Digital Twins, metamodelling platforms or model-driven operation. Our example concerns the modern organization that continuously aims to become more innovative and gain competitive advantage therefore, it employs smart devices like drones in different business operations. Abstract: Leveraging a combination of analytical frameworks and empirical assessments, this study investigates the effects of wait-for-free (WFF) pricing schemes on the monetization of serialized, digital entertainment content, which has become increasingly pervasive on online platforms. WFF pricing is a strategy in which consumers are given the option to either wait a certain amount of time to acquire digital content at no cost or pay to consume it immediately. We evaluate the extent to which habit formation and presentbiased preferences driven by the consumption of addictive stock affect individual consumers' willingness to wait (or pay) for content, which, in turn, determines the efficacy of WFF pricing. We also examine the conditions under which consumers switch from waiting for free content to instantaneously purchasing content. Our findings indicate that WFF pricing increases the sales of serialized digital content, generating new demand from customers who would otherwise forgo participation in the market. In addition, the pricing design effectively generates sustained profits in the long run. We found that most consumers who initiate a purchase either upon initial market entry or upon switching continue to purchase as new episodes become available. Moreover, the results indicate that as a user accumulates free episodes of a specific series, given extended waiting periods, the likelihood of their conversion from a wait-for-free customer to an instant-purchase customer increases. In particular, WFF pricing effectively augments the willingness to pay of low-valuation consumers as habit formation builds up through time with the free consumption of serialized content. One free episode can elevate the likelihood of consumer purchase by up to 13%. However, as the number of free episodes consumed goes beyond a threshold, the likelihood of conversion decreases. We conclude with a discussion of managerial implications that can help content providers monetize their serialized digital content products. Collapse

Abstract: While online user-generated reviews are believed to lower purchase uncertainty, some recent studies reveal that the inconsistency between numerical ratings and the sentiment of text reviews exists and impacts consumers' purchase intention. However, we know little about which factors mitigate the impact of such inconsistency. In this paper, we examine the impact of text-rating inconsistency on consumers' actual purchase behavior and the moderating effect of user-generated pictures in online reviews on the relationship between text sentiment-rating inconsistency and consumers' purchase behavior. This study contributes to the literature by being among the first to examine how inconsistency between text sentiment and product rating influences individual consumers' actual purchase behavior and how the presence of pictures in reviews mitigates the negative impact of review inconsistency on purchase. Our results also guide platform owners on how to manage their strategy for encouraging user-generated reviews. Collapse

Abstract: This paper argues for the use of a multifaceted, and contextualized approach to smart city development by unpacking how individual smart city initiatives have planned and implemented diverse projects based on their distinct environments, stakeholders, and goals. We evaluated and compared the institutional, economic, technical and policy characteristics of seven smart city initiatives (Montgomery, San Diego, New York City, Calgary, London, Vienna, Singapore). Our findings demonstrate three principal implications in smart city development. First, the surveyed smart cities established concrete cases for the use of different project development models in terms of leadership and governance styles, adoption of smart city applications, and planning and management strategies. Second, such differences stemmed from the multifaceted interactions that link environment, stakeholders, and goals. Finally, knowledge management (KM) played a crucial role in ensuring the accumulation and transferability of organizational and policymaking infrastructure within and between smart city initiatives. Abstract: Learning from experience is a central mechanism underlying organizational capabilities. However, in examining how organizations learn from past experiences, much of the literature has focused on situations in which actors are facing a repeated event. We direct attention to a relatively underexamined question: when an organization experiences a largely idiosyncratic series of events, at what level of granularity should these events, and the associated actions and outcomes, be encoded? How does generalizing from experience impact the wisdom of future choices and what are the boundary conditions or factors that might mitigate the degree of desired generalization? To address these questions, we develop a computational model that incorporates how characteristics of opportunities (e.g., acquisition candidates, new investments, product development) might be encoded so that experiential learning is possible even when the organization’s experience is a series of unique events. Abstract: Drawing on institutional anomie theory, we examine how the crisis in local newspapers has induced organizational wrongdoings in local communities. We argue that, because local newspapers are the primary source of accountability journalism in local communities, their decline leads to an anomic state that increases the scale of organizational wrongdoing. We also investigate whether institutional complementarity helps overcome the anomic state: Due to functional similarity, community social connectedness compensates for the scarcity of local newspapers. Our analysis of U.S. metropolitan areas for the period of 2007–2015 reveals that the positive relationship between local newspaper scarcity and the scale of organizational wrongdoing is not present in all communities but does appear when a community lacks community social connectedness. We also find that this moderating role of community social connectedness is observed only for internal organizational wrongdoings that are less visible to the public than external ones. Collapse

Abstract: Governments have been publishing Open Government Data (OGD) on online portals to encourage the development of value-added services. The success of these services depends heavily on the quality of OGD and its metadata. Several methods have been proposed to evaluate this quality, but some rely on manual assessments, which can be time-consuming and expensive to perform. Furthermore, these methods focus on the portal rather than the data, ignore user preferences, or do not distinguish between metadata and data quality. This makes it difficult for users to identify data quality issues. This paper proposes a list of OGD quality dimensions for assessing data and metadata quality. The dimensions were identified through a literature review and integrated into a novel conversational agent that incorporates user preferences into the quality assessment. A usability evaluation with 14 users reveals its ease of use and usefulness for obtaining overall and detailed (meta)data quality. Collapse

Abstract: Information technology (IT) is a critical resource and asset for a firm’s internal operations and external interactions with outside stakeholders. This paper explores IT capabilities that enable a retailer’s value chain activities and interfaces with suppliers and customers. IT capabilities that enable the value chain activities of logistics and operations as well as those of marketing and sales are identified to examine how they influence a retailer’s implementation of value chain interfaces. Through the lens of organizational information processing theory (OIPT), we find that both IT capabilities and IT infrastructure play a pivotal role in implementing value chain interfaces but in distinctive ways. On the supplier-facing side, a retailer’s IT infrastructure and IT capabilities enabling logistics and operations are essential to its vendor-managed inventory (VMI) system. On the customer-facing side, a retailer’s e-commerce website requires IT infrastructure and IT capabilities that enable marketing and sales. Moreover, synergies are found downstream for e-commerce website that benefits from the integration of IT infrastructure and IT capabilities enabling logistics and operations while such synergies are not found upstream for VMI. This partial complementary effect is explicated by the sequential asymmetric information dependency of value chain activities. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for the research and practice of IT enablement and integration. Collapse

Abstract: Online reviews affect consumer purchase decisions and become prevalent in different sectors. Platforms elicit useful reviews by allowing consumers to vote for helpfulness. The link between review features and review helpfulness hence has been a topic of broad interest in information systems (IS) and Internet commerce. Psy­ chological science studies show that expressed emotions in information – valence and arousal significantly in­ fluence receivers’ engagement and valuation. Unlike valence (negative or positive) that is widely-analyzed, emotional arousal is a less-studied attribute of online reviews. This study presents a careful account of the nonlinear link between emotional arousal and review helpfulness. Following a rigorous procedure of theorizing and testing nonlinear relationships (Haans et al. 2016), we articulate latent mechanisms leading to an inverted Ushaped association and how valence would moderate the nonlinear effect of review arousal. We analyze reviews on experience goods from Yelp.com and find firm support for our hypotheses. The findings are triangulated using reviews on search goods from Amazon.com. While the nonlinear effect of review arousal and interactions with review valence are robust to both types of goods, an alternative moderation path of review valence on the inverted U-shaped relationship is observed. Our empirical study contributes to the literature by shedding lights on the dynamics among arousal, valence, review helpfulness, and product types, which illustrates a prototypical example to IS/e-commerce scholars on rigorously conceptualizing and estimating U-shaped links as well as their moderations.
